Question

Guys/Gals,
Well i got my first taste of the new age WRX today. The dealer wouldn't let me take a MY02 for a spin as he didn't have a demo of it but he did let me take a MY01 and a MY00 "Classic" for a spin.
I did prefer the ride of the MY01 however.
My questions is the dealer tells me the MY02 has a closer ratio gear box and claims it faster off the mark than the MY01. Of course as I couldn't drive the MY02 i just have to take his word for it.
How true is this and to what extent.?

Apart from that the only other differences (in Australia) are a single CD instead of 6 Stack & keypad alarm.

Thoughts?
Thanks

MrZ

Ive ordered a MY02 for pickup in MArch & dealer indicated that only differences are the aerial & the key light thing. The aerial is not built into the rear windscreen & theres a light around the key entry.

The MY02 does have a different ratio box...in Australia. For the ratios check out
http://www.iwoc.co.uk/my2002.html

They are the same fitted to my P1 here in the UK and the same as fitted to the STi 4/5 door in pre bugeye format.

Would this new ratio box make up for what some have termed "sluggish" performance compared to the MY00?

Subaru Australia are claiming that compared to the MY01, the MY02 now accelerates in third gear from 50kmh to 120kmh in 7.2 seconds as compared to 8.56 for my MY01.

I'm guessing this has to be in the vicinity of 2-3 car lengths?
That sounds like a substantial difference to me.
Am i wrong?

The new set of gearbox ratios in Oz WRXs are essentially the same as the Jap spec WRX NB. It just a case of Subaru mixing and matching specs from their parts bin.
One thing to note about the Jap spec WRX NB is that they come with 16" wheels & 2-pot front brakes as standard.

I know for a fact in Oz that the MY02 comes with 4 pot front and 2 pot rear with 17" wheels.

Of course, Oz spec cars are identical to Euro spec cars. The only difference between MY02 Oz spec & MY02 Euro spec is that the Oz spec uses the Jap spec gearbox.
Only US spec & JDM spec WRXs have 2-pot brakes and 16" wheels as standard.

I'd like to hear more opinions from owners of both. Particularly people with the MY02 and the performance you're experiencing.

Has anyone noticed the re-profiled grill on all Japanese MY02 Imprezas? It is basically the same grill found on non-Prodrive UK STi. Are they fitted on the export versions?

looks identical to euro MY02 same crummy plastic grill. Only had the car a month, 2k miles so it's a bit early to be able to comment on performance except to say, it's amazing mate. But then I'd never driven an Impreza before I picked it up so don't have anything sensible to compare it to, well actually that's the problem my previous car was too sensible to compare it to.

As has been mentioned previously I think we're all pretty sure the MY01/MY02 changes in europe are just costmetic.
