My MY00 jumped out of 5th on me last week, and then again a day later. Thought I'd get it sorted by the dealer - turns out to be a known problem of a nut loose in the gearbox. (For the technical among you, it holds the spring tight which pushes a small ball-bearing into the detent (V-shaped notch) on the shaft and hold it in gear.)

Not too much problem to fix, you'd think.

7 hours' labour and around £400+VAT!!!!

Now we'll see whether Warranty Direct are worth the money or not

At least I get 10% discount for being an SIDC member, which has already saved me around £40 for the last service (+ PIAA fitting, hence more than normal service).

Perhaps I should charge everyone coming to the Jordan karting thing a tenner for the tour, to cover it

Not happy

Rich,

That sounds a bit steep - I would phone a couple of other dealers and ask for a quote for doing the same work. It may be worth arguing the price before paying.....

Ask Pete Croney too 'cos I'm pretty sure he's done this fix a few times and would know how long it really takes.

That happenned to me at 4000 miles, and has just started going again at 25752, it's covered by my warranty as the part is a known fault, it's the end of the 5th gear linkage where the split pin (holding the nut on) snaps, or was never fitted by that Jap guy on a particular shift building the gearboxes. There are other links from about nov 2000 in this bbs relating to said issue !

Yep, EU import so the 1yr's warranty's well gone. Too late to get other quotes for the work, as they couldn't be sure it was that until it was all in pieces and half of the labour had been done...

Just have to accept it and move on I suppose

My MY00 had the same work done under Warranty(though it's not an import). Was told it's a two day job, and pretty much a gearbox rebuild

Nope, as I only paid £15,500 for the car brand new, including air con, plane tickets over there and the ferry back

Rich,

Beat me to it.... Just think of the £400 as added on to the original price, and you've still saved £4-5000

I had this problem on a MY99 import. 5th gear was grinding as I selected it and occasionally popping out. It was all covered under Warranty Direct warranty but they fitted a faulty part so it had to be redone 1,000 miles later. The garage said it was £1,200 per job.

That's good news (the bit about being covered by WD). Certainly they authorised the dealer to do the work OK, so hopefully it'll go through fine. It was £480 in the end, and no SIDC discount (muttering something about getting the parts in specially or some such rubbish).

S'pose it gets me Air Miles on my Visa card

Good news about Warranty Direct. I was a bit unsure about taking out a 3rd party warranty for my MY97.

Please keep us informed

Sorry Rich, missed the post Mileage is 33400 miles, EU MY00 PPP.

Warranty Direct claim form posted tomorrow morning - I'll let you know as soon as I hear either way (should be within 14 days according to the blurb).
