its a 1993 legacy turbo, it has a blitz dump valve, that sounds to be churping away nicely but i can usually hear a lovely jet engine whine as she comes up to boost but its not there

Are your tappets noisy at the moment? What has been done to it because if it's standard it shouldn't ever run anywhere near 20 psi.

Also get yourself over to UK Legacy Forums (Powered by Invision Power Board)

If your tappets are noisy the knock sensor can pick this up (as knock) and put the car into safe mode. You can move the knock sensor to the chargecooler bracket to test if it is that but obviously the sensor won't work as it should.

The tappets can't be adjusted because they are hydraulic to change them is an engine out job but at least they are cheap to buy.

It should be safe to run but noisy and in safe mode. Legacy's are bad for their tappets

What oil are you using in it? That makes a difference.
