Default Are THese SpeedCameras On The M1??

Was coming up the M1 today near Sheffield & saw a White Van with Orange Flashing Lights on the Bridge with 2 Cameras mounted on Tripods aimed at the Motorway.

No human was behind them or anything?

On the way back down this Afternoon, there was another with a Silver 4X4, also with Orange flashing lights, with 2 Cameras on Tripods trained on the traffic.
Didn't appear to be Plod??

Anyone got any idea what that is all about??

Thanks.

Kind regards

ANPR - Automatic Number Plate Recognition used by DVLA or the Police to find wanted cars using the motorways, for so many reasons.

Thanks for explaining that for me.

Do you think they would use their own motors in doing this?

Thanks.

Kind regards.

No they rarely use marked vehicles on bridges, even the Camera vans only have orange lights on the roof as the operator can be civilian. There will usually be marked or unmarked cars very close to it though so they can pursue if need be.

Saw similar around Cheshire a couple of weeks ago. Tripod mounted camera in front of a large road sign with a civilian vehicle with orange rooflights concealed behind the sign Another car was parked by a streetlight with a camera stuck half way up. Must be some sort of traffic survey, don't think it was enforcement.

They can tripod mount Gatso's in what is known as 'manned mode' (where its attended by an operator who's opinion of excess speed is corroborated by the Gatso, so no road lines needed) which is what the one SK is reporting sounds like, but on the M1, that sounds like ANPR, especially as they usually use 2 camera's!

They did use 2 Cameras on both occasions. ( looks like not enforcement then, not that I was going fast or anything ish)

Thanks Simon.

Kind regards

Saw somethink similar on the A1 last week. Think it is just traffic survey. Looked like they were radar type counters rather than cameras (did not seem to have a lens on them)
