Try owning a Land Rover or a Volvo.
Subarus are only expensive if your used to Fords or similar. Over the term of ownership the costs are outweighed by things not going wrong.

only hard thing is cambelt,do all other stuff urself at a cost of about £100 and cambelt costs £200 from main stealer, £300 saving

Go to a specialist and you should be able to nearly halve that bill, cam belt or no cam belt.

I'd be a lot happier to see a service book with lots of API stamps or Scoobyclinic etc. At least I would know the car had been looked after by professionals and not cowboys.

Even cambelt can be DIY as at least you can get to it once rad is removed. I need one changing on my Citreon and I would not even attempt it - esp. as my neighbour will do it for £70.00 incl. belt

no need to remove the rad to do a belt plenty of room with it in there, and as for specialists not ripping people off yeah right!
