A few people have reported their cars as not running as well on BP Ultimate and from my experience it has made my car feel rough and held back....it's either that or coincendental to my car's general running.

I use Tesco 99 whenever possible and again, it could be coincidence but the throttle respone feels crisper, the engine smoother and more rev happy.

If I have to use Ultimate, I put in Millars Octane Booster first.

Runs OK.

Without the Booster, it seems to hesitate then, goes OK.

Shell V Power, Tesco 99, Waitrose Super, Esso Super all good.

Question??

Has anyone noticed that tons of Shell Garages are now becoming BP'S???

im no expert but i would of thought if you normally use one type of fuel and then switch to another it would be best to reset ecu quickly so it knows to re-adjust things accordingly..

just an idea??

It does. Although I recall a thread about some guy saying that his PPP'd STi was feeling held back at higher revs and was perhaps related to fuel choice. Mike Woods (Prodrive) replied in the same thread and explained that if the ECU had detected an issue in it's learnt table then the best way to re-adjust it was to reset the ECU via battery disconnect. The understanding was that because most of the time cars aren't driven at high revs, it will take a while for the ECU to readjust within that range.

BP Ultimate in the UK is the worst fuel you can use in the Impreza, V-Power or tesco 99 is the best, any other SUL is "ok", talking about UK versions here.

Ultimate is dire on any modified car

If it's a UK car that hasn't specifically been mapped for higher RON then it should be fine mate.

V power is definately the way to go if you can get hold of it though.

Pat Herbourn reckons its to do with the way the fuel atomises. In his opinion V-Power is the best at this and Ultimate not very good. Before I had my 03STiPPP remapped I'd occasionally use Ultimate, it ran a bit lumpy but the fuel consumption was noticeably improved?. Only use V-Power now.

Is this only an issue if you have your car remapped?

Is this an issue for MY05 STi PPP? Or should BP Ultimate make no difference?

I love the smell of V-Power in the mornings.

In the 2 and a bit years I've had my car it's always used Optimax then V-Power. The label inside the petrol flap says 98 RON so nothing else will do. I've used BP twice, both occassions was only a tenners worth to get me to a shell station.

Leef

Ultimate should be OK in a PPP car, Prodrive quote "continue use of 97 RON for best results". It won't do any damage but V-Power is just a lot better and usually cheaper. If a car is remapped for V-Power (99RON) then it it would be defeating the object to put in anything less, although the ECU should compensate. I keep some Millers OB in my boot if I have to put in any 97.

Cheers, Diccy.

Depends what you mean by issue: You have PPP, it needs SUL, BP ultimate is SUL.

BUT

Common concensus appears to be that Scoobies don't run as well on BP Ultimate. Mappers certainly don't seem to rate it. Give V power and Tescos 99RON a go and see if you notice a difference.

Had my import 1998 Forester T/tb auto for 5 yrs now, most of the time it runs on Ultimate ( no Shell near ) and has been fine, no problems at all.
Perhaps the auto is easier on the engine ? !

my understanding is that the car adjusts to run on the lowest grade fuel put in it. the only way to take advantage of a higher octane fuel is to do an ecu re-set (disconnect the battery for 20 mins). The car then re-sets to the fuel in it at the time.

And I always run on BP 98 (new age sti with ecutek tune) - except for track work when I use 100 octane avgas (and do a re-set before using it on the track) - and the car has been de-catted.

For info, look at Bob's response to this thread.

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...bob-rawle.html

For anyone who doesn't know, Bob is a VERY highly respected mapper. His comments reflect what has SEEN the ECU doing on cars with different fuels, and are not just a subjective "seems to go better on that gov!"
