NEWAGE AIR CON

NEWAGE AIR CON
I have an MY05 WRX PPP, for all you newage owners, does anyone get annoyed when you switch the fans on and direct them to the windscreen, the air con comes on.
i just switch mine off quickly before it comes on. I know subaru made this standard but its really not needed on a performance car!
cheers

Seems to clear the screen quicker with A/C on.........
After having a BMW before the scooby I think the A/C symbol is more of a hope than a description of what it does........

I like it too, the AC acts as dehumidifier and as stated clears the screen in seconds, and if you don't need it you can always switch it off (unlike other cars).

Just to add my point of view, I'm happy it does it and can't see a problem.
The aircon is disabled when you boot it, so there's no real performance issue - and if the screen needs demisting then should you be booting it at that time anyway?
As soon as you switch to another setting for the air flow the aircon switches off (assuming it's not 'on' or set on auto and needed).

But since thoroughly cleaning with cheapo Asda glass cleaner, it seems like any other car.
There was a thread recently saying it could be due to pierced door membranes, boot seals etc etc...

well you could be booting it then realise the windscreen needs de misting and then the car suffers a performance drop, im not having a rant just for me i dont like the function....... everyone to their own etc!

I quite like the feature TBH, tis a PITA when you glance down and realise that its been left on.
But clearing my windscreen quickly makes up for it.
As you say each to their own though

The air con acts has a dehumidifier and will demist the windows instantly. The air con compressor does not stay on for very long typically 30 secs and then switches off leaving the fan running and due the cold air outside will stay off >95% of the time hence it should effect performance of fuel economy noticebly. This is only in winter and is the only time the windows should mist up..unless your a dogger

The reason for this is the evaporator (the bit that cools and dehumidifys the air) is cold and covered in water (from dehumidfying - obviously). But it is also situated right next to the hot (coolant temperture) heater matrix which re-heats the dried air. You switch it off, heater matrix evaporates the water, steam rises, so where does it go? Yes, on the windscreen
It's even worse if the matrix/evaporator is covered in dust/dirt as it reatains the moisture.

Simple answer is to either use the a/c all the time or don't use at all
But as we all know with the latter, you have to use the a/c to demist, and the system needs a 10min excercise every month, so you can't win.
Once you turn it off you need to give it time for all the water to drain and chance to evaporate, it will almost always start steaming up when you switch it off on a damp/humid day (even in the summer). Full fans, full heat, on the feet, set to outside air, and windows open for 10mins should be enough to dry out the heater/evapourator box and let any damp air escape from the interior.

If the pollen filter is blocked, it will reduce airflow through the cabin so any damp already in the interior (carpets from wet feet, sweaty seats etc ) won't be removed.
Can't do no harm taking out the filter and giving it a quick vacuum out every 6months or so.
Also blocked drain tubes will cause problems, hard to check, but wet footwell carpets is a sure sign.
Steaming up and a/c is an age old problem. Find an 25 yr old old Jag (a/c runs all the time..if it isn't broke )freshly parked up on a damp day...all the window will steam up as soon as you jump in and start it up again (vent flaps open when you turn on the ignition, letting out all the damp air in the heater box straight on to the windscreen)

Well I've found a solution that works for me, (MY05), Turn middle heater control, to Auto, Turn right heater control to about 22 ish, turn off AC (light goes off) and I've had a week of no misting up !
Had three people in car with wet coats etc and works for me !
Just have to remember to turn AC on a bit every week or so !
