Mobile Speed Camera Vans
Was doing 60 mph on a dual carriageway that was 50mph. Noticed Plod & braked.
Noticed on the GPS that 60 on the speedo was showing 56 mph.
Is it true that speedos show 10% more than you are actually doing and,do you get 10% plus 2mph leeway from Plod?
If so 56mph puts me 1 mph under the calculation?
Thanks.
KInd regards
Alan MaC.

The GPS would be the one to believe as they are quite accurate. My speedo overreads by about 6% compared to my GPS. The leeway varies from county to county i think, hopefully you'll be ok.

I believe that the ACPO guidelines are 10% + 2mph tolerance but I'm sure that some have been done for less than that?
I've noticed that my speedo on my 03 WRX over-reads slightly in comparison to the GPS reading which is usually around 3-4mph under the speedo.

Dave it was in South Wales, where I see you are based.
That bit of the A 40 around Monmouth where it is 50 for about a mile.
Well hidden, if you don't know about it watch out.
Kind regards

If the GPS showed 56 in the 50 when you were zapped then you should ..... just .... be OK. ACPO guidelines are 10% +2 making it 57 and above that gets a ticket. Thats if the force concernced are going by the guidelines as some don't ! Best of luck .....

And if it's a civilian manned scamera van, who knows what they are set at!
I notice on pistonheads.com there's details of a case where these civilian manned scamera vans are now being questioned regarding their legality....worth watching

I'm sure this 10% + 2 thing stopped when my Dad was a traffic cop, and that was about 5 years ago.
I got done last year doing 34mph in a 30.

The exact same thing happened to me by one of them dicks in a van who parks up on the grass with a little black tripod camera. This was in 2003 btw.

The 10%+2 is as mentioned a guideline. Some people follow it, some set the trigger point higher, some set it lower. At 56 in a 50 there's a reasonably good chance you'll have got away with it, but no certainty. I'm afraid the only way to find out is to watch the post for a couple of weeks and hope!
FWIW, I have once come into sight of a similar van in a 50 with nearly 60 on the speedo (so perhaps a couple of mph less than you), and similarly once or twice at about 80 indicated on a motorway (in mine, probably a genuine 74) and never heard anything.
