Exclamation Winter's here !!!

The P1's heading towards battery failure again - short runs and cold weather mean it becomes grumpier and grumpier at starting. Before I get frustrated swapping and charging batteries again (pretty sure it arsed up the MAF sensor last year), can anyone recommend a trickle charger?

I keep it in the garage so what I'm looking for is a charger which I can connect to the battery whilst it's still connected to the car - thereby making it easy to do and not upsetting the alarm/immobiliser or anything else. A Lotus garage mentioned it to me last year as they use them but couldn't be more definitive in what to get.

Thoughts gratefully received!

Gordo

Why don't you just buy a new battery, if it's on it's way out it will only let you down somewhere eventually and sods law dictates that it will be on a freezing wet night in the middle of nowhere

A battery which is working properly doesnt need to be trickle charged as the alternator is perfectly capable of charging it, the only time that you may need a charger is if the car has been sitting for extended periods of time and has gone flat, if it is going flat overnight its probably F?cked

you could adapt a battery charger by putting a plug on the end of the wires and put it in you ciggy lighter socket

"The P1's heading towards battery failure again"

are u sure its not your charging system that has the fault? If u got a new battery then it will 99% be a charging/leakage fault.

P1's fine - or at least two separate dealers have checked it and said it's ok.

It does short runs all the time so rarely gets to charge the battery enough to cover the energy of starting. It's had two new batteries in the last two years - both expensive ones with guarantees etc - and they're fine if I take them off and re-charge them.

Dave - I'll PM you, thx

Know how you feel Gordo. I had a P1 with a grumpy battery, the dealer checked the battery, alternator etc. and everything was fine. They said it was down to the Tracker draining the battery. Now I`ve got a 05MY STI and I`ve had Subaru Assitance out 3 times in a year. They told me its down to the car being left for a week or so and the way the New Age cars charge the battery. They advised me to get a Charger if the car was regularly being left for long periods of time and recommended one from Halfrauds.
