Is it just me or is the market really grotty at present. Ive had my MY93 WRX for sale now for a month and not a single sensible enquiry. Is anyone else in the same boat, or know where I can get rid for not too silly money. The going rate is still high in Autotrader etc and Im looking for nowhere that money....help !!

The entire second hand car market is a mess. A Ford Focus bought earlier this year is now worth less than 50% of its original value. Imagine what that means to older cars.

The other factors mentioned above aren't helping with the Scoobs, as people are getting put off them by insurance, theft, etc.

It's not a seller's market, and it won't be for the forseeable future.

Only plus point is that the car you replace your Scoob with will also be cheaper.

I knew it was bad but...

Went to SGT in Maidenhead yesterday for a quote on my MY00 W Reg Scoob with Full leather, Security Devices, other bits and pieces, 11K on clock, registered 1st March this year.

As I was not part-exchanging it they offered £15,500 which I think is taking the pi$$. Said that unless they made £2,500 profit it was not worth their time and suggested I advertise privately.

1) The Second hand car markets in tatters
2) Scoobys are getting nicked left right and centre and no-one wants the hassle
3) They are now getting butchered for parts, ie the scoop.
4) Insurance because of the above is a complete nightmare.
5) Running costs are terrible.

I have to agree that the cost of insuring a scoob is taking the p155!!!

How come the Impreza is supposed to be Insurance Group 17 but it is cheaper to insure a Honda S2000 (Group 20) or a Porsche Boxter.

Just had a quite well known specialist motor insurance provider say that they wouldn't insure Impreza's.

Sorry but I don't wish to name who it was on the BBS.

How much are you trying to sell it for? I've just bought a 93WRX with 41000 miles for £7200 FROM A DEALER! I couldn't belive how much they have dropped in price, a friend of mine paid £11,000 for a L reg UK scooby a year and a half ago and it had done 97,000 miles.

And fortunately, as the dealers are so nice they bear in mind the residual value of the car during trade-in negotiations ...

The minimum Gauranteed Future Value or my car after 3 years and 36,000 miles is £9,500. When I bought the car I thought this was low and that I could buy it after the 3 years and sell it for a little profit (Rather than just giving it back)

I think after 3 years of insurance, servicing and fuel bills I will be eager to hand back the keys!!

Now don't get me wrong everytime I drive it I think the cost/hassle is worth it but what is the image going to be like in another 2 years or so??

Went to my dealer today and here's the story.....

They have a P1 in the showroom and one out the back ready for a customer. The P1 in the showroom hasn't been registered yet, will be in the next 6 weeks or so. It's a cancelled order....

Asked what I could get trade in for mine and how much it was. Sales guy put the P1 down on the quote at £31,495 and my car at £18,250 - I paid £23,050 for it from them in March. Leaves difference of £13,245. Hmmmm, so much about desperate to get rid of them / do a good deal.

So mines down by £4,800, or have they quoted a price where they make very little instead of discounting the P1?

I suggest you ring around re the P1 - these have depreciated very heavily - or better still wait for a good deal on an sti6 - should be able to get one for around £20k

I've heard of new ones at dealers going for £25k and nearly new ones for much less

As far as a normal UK turbo goes I wouldnt pay more than £13k for one less than 6 months old - given I can get a brand new one in Belgium for £14.5k all in!

As I mentioned - Dealer offered me £15.5K (non-part-ex price)

Money spent on car + mods = £28K
Insured for £26.5K

Sad to say but I almost wish some scumbag would nick it

I don't think so.

I thought it makes no difference what you say the car is worth when you insure it, the insurance company will only give you the current market value if it's nicked / written off. In your case summat like 15.5K.

There's a 2000W P1 (with extras, P1 plate etc) for sale in Autotrader at £27500 at the moment - hardly a gold-plated investment!

You'd almost certainly get it for not much more that £25k with hard haggling

My insurance company told me that if they had to pay out within 12 months then it would be for the value to replace car for a NEW one + the £5K's worth of mods (new car is about £20K) so call it £25K in total.

I agree that most of them talk CR@P much of the time to get your business but even so I am sure that it's worth heaps more nicked.

Called my dealer too, regarding their P1 (seems a LOT of dealers have at least one kicking around)

Its actually a demonstrator and they refuse to sell it for less than the list price!

Strangely, they also said they could find a brand new P1 for me as there's lots of cancelled orders.

He wouldn't even 'insult me' with a price for my car - which I'd bought of them back in Jan 2000!

I've already spent £4,000 on extras at least.

Doesn't look as though things will get better, so the sooner I sell my UK car and get an STI VI the better I think.

Its not just scoobies that can't be sold - I have just swapped my Audi S2 for a Forester stb and took a hit of £2000 on the HP.
Should have sold it last year.
I found little interest privately and saw massive variations on the part exchange - most were offering 'auction' prices as they didn't want to touch it. Seems that the published public car bibles are way out of touch.
Torching your car won't do much as you'll get the current market value.
