For £10k you could be looking at Bugeye (00-03) WRX's. Another £2k will see you into Blobeye (03-05) WRX's and Bugeye STi's. If you're looking at newage Scoobs, aim for ones with the PPP (Prodrive Performance Pack) as you may soon tire of the standard performance, and PPP's make the cars so much better to drive. If you want a classic shape then you could be looking at UK special editions such as the RB5, or imports such as the '98 Type R's.
If you can sell your car privately you would be better off as a dealer will rip you off on the trade-in value and then you'll be paying their over-inflated prices on the replacement. This double whammy could lose you a lot of money
If you can raise some extra ca$h, I know of a rather good '03 WRX PPP for sale CLICKY

You'll get a good, low mileage MY01 bugeye WRX (2001/2002) for £10k, though you'll want to spend another £600+ getting it ecutek remapped to boost the power to ~260bhp and 256lb/ft torque. The standard WRX will soon feel sluggish with "only" 215bhp (225bhp in later models).
Alternatively you would get yourself a really nice MY99 or MY00 classic WRX for that money.
I would recommend buying a car that is as near to standard as possible, although some subtle mods like bigger or better wheels, detango, backbox, etc. is fine.
A car that already has ecutek or PPP will also save you some serious cash but check who did the mapping or that the PPP was fitted by the main dealer.
I bought mine in May and have spent a fair bit on it since. I could've bought an STi with the original £££ plus what I've spent since but I've enjoyed choosing my own mods and it now has my own look and feel

Traded my MY01 WRX into dealer and got £8500 for it. Was well smart example with lots of STI goodies on it and Prodrive wheels. Think he sold it on for £9000. Shows that certainly up north and even more so in Scotland a good Scoob can be had for 10k easily. I found a MY01 STI in Autotrader for £8000 with damage to paintwork on door!!
