Question

Question for all Impreza owners...

Imagine the scene...

Wet road, at a junction, and you want to turn right... while turning into the main road, you then boot it...

What happens if you're driving the following cars, given the different setups:
Impreza Turbo?
Impreza WRX STi?
Impreza WRX STi Type RA?
Impreza WRX STi Type R?
Impreza P1?

Which is the most tail-happy?

Cheers.

Most of this depends on tyres but...

Impreza Turbo
Bit of wheel spin (maybe) and a bit of understeer.

Impreza WRX STi
Almost certainly wheelspin and a 4 wheel drift.

Type RA / R (WITH diff control - set to back)
HUGE oversteer and almost definate spin if you are not on the ball.

Impreza P1
Only limited experience in this car, but I would expect definate wheel spin and a 4 wheel drift slightly tending towards understeer.

Bare in mind though, that this is a VERY specific scenario and you shouldn't base any decisions on this alone.

Cheers

Well, yes, but I already have one, and required something a bit more practical that also allows me to have fun on a trackday.

Simon,
I have a standard UK Turbo, and it seems to display oversteer if I boot it viciously out of a junction, albeit not much. It must be these dirty Welsh roads I drive on

Cool

Mine (standard UK MY99 - good tyres) will understeer a little and then oversteer every time under power

Nice and progressive though

Thanks. I didn't know the RA had a diff lock wheel (or whatever it's called). To think, I could save a bundle and still have fun.

I know this is very specific but it would attain the limit very quickly and suddenly, and wouldn't require/allow the old one-two on the steering wheel.

What is driving an RA or R like with the diff set to forwards?

Steady on! Mind you, they do look absolutely horrid, sound completely naff, and move slower than snails, plus understeer more than a fiesta with worn tyres on a wet road

ShadowNinja,

You can change the overall handling of a car with a few well thought out changes... and I'm not just talking "Prodrive" settings.

Wink

ShadowNinja,

The STI will spin if your not v.careful. Oops!! And if you wind the centre diff right up you'll kill it. If you wind the centre diff up to the first amber notch, it behaves more like a UK turbo. Still tail happy though

Get the bump-steer removed and the geometry set up well and you'll have tons more fun whichever Scoob you drive...

All interesting cars and an interesting situation.
The reality is that different people would react very differently in all these cars.
(So would their passengers in the cases where the driver mismanaged the situation.)
These drivers would have a different experience of each situation… one might feel scared the other merely amused. A third might feel challenged.
These different drivers would also cause the cars to react differently... and there is the rub…

People spend a lot on their cars, when they buy them, when they modify them and when they upgrade them. They then sell the benefit / risk on to the next owner.
I would propose the you, ere…

Get selfish…

Spend something on yourself…
- upgrade your driving and have more fun than a sackful of supermodels when you drive the TVR...or any of the other cars on your list.
- Allow your passengers the pleasure of seeing you cope with all of them… comfortably within your abilities and despite the conditions or the configuration or peculiarities of the particular vehicle you are driving at the time.

But then I would say that I suppose...

Exclamation

Std UK MY00 turbo dry road. Pulled out of a junction in front of speeding woman who appeared from nowhere (parked cars obscuring view). Panic foot down whilst turning right, bloody hell it was like being in a motor boat passing through an oil tanker's wake.

Talk about squirming slippery eel, I swear the entire car body was helical for about 50 yards. Anyway they tarmacced the road last week so you can't see her skid marks any more. Unless they're still in her pants!
