Look on the bright side, if you find out there is cctv and they have a good picture of them (you find most garages have cctv due to driveaway without paying) this person will be crucified for leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it, its not good to start with but the outcome will be very favourable to you, not them

What, the cops want you to do their job? Surely not? Too busy sitting in Scamera vans I'd think

Further to what Tony has said; the majority of garages claim to have an ANPR system in place so their registered number should have been recorded. I doubt they will help you though; its a Catch22 isnt it?

Legal bods may correct me, but aren't you legally entitled to access of any footage which may feature YOU under the data protection act

You are; for a fee, if theyre registered. The ANPR information is different though. Theyre obliged to assist the Police though so itd be nice if theyd take an interest.

Do they need to see the number plate? Might not the driver be visible. Also, is it not an office for the garage not to provide you with a tape given that failing to report an accident is an offence? I'd go back to the police and make further enquiries!

Best.

Hi

I wouldn't be happy with the Police saying "well if the garage can't see anything then neither will we" Alot of garage CCTV systems are a load of cr*p but, tapes can be enhanced fairly easily now by most Police Forces.

You are correct in the fact that you are entitled to see footage of yourself for a fee under the data protection act. (£10.00 if memory serves) This however will need to block out everybody else and anything that could identify them. It costs Council's hundreds of pounds to edit tapes before the public are alowed to view them. This is why the Police should be doing the job not you.

Did the Escort driver buy fuel? The driver may have used a Credit/Switch card. Make sure the Police look into this. Put it in writing to them if they refuse.

Its true though isnt it? As far as I understand it, if you report a crime then the Police force have to act; you seem to hear all too often that a Police officer or worse, a civilian support officer, decided that it warranted no further action.
