Toss up tween Compaq, Dell or Toshiba.
I'm using a Compaq Amarda M700 at the mo' which has been good as gold, I like the look of the Dell's, also the Tosh Tetra 9100.
Anyone got any good or bad experiences with either of these makes?

Compaq ones like to die. We use Toshiba ones at work and they are very good. Our desktops are Dell and they are spot on, so I spose their laptops will likely be good quality too.
My mate has a Sony Vaio and it is definately the dog's danglies

Apple PowerBook G4.
Toshiba are generally good but they are having some major issues at the moments so avoid Satellite Pro 6000s and some of the other older models. Tecras are very good anlong with the Sony Vaio range.
Seems to be a shift away from Dell at the moment with stories of poor service and uncompetetive pricing, from some big corporates.

I have a Dell that I run with two batteries and it pretty much lasts all day. Never done anything but work with it, only problem being random movement from the touchpad.

Dell are competitively priced, build quality ok, telephone support is rubbish but online support is excellent. On my 2nd Latitude for work. Battery life impressive.
Got a Sony Vaio for home, coming for 3 years and it has been absolutely faultless. Very impressive.

Forgot to mention, that in my desktop support days 2-3 years ago, we used Toshiba's for the offshore fleet as nothing else would stand up to the rigours of being thrown around oil rigs Once got a Tosh back from Kazakhstan that had been dropped 20ft onto a metal floor, apart from the trashed screen I recovered the data off it with no problems.

We've just had a couple of Tosh Tecra 9000s through at work.
P3 1.2Ghz, 256MB, 30GB, Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, DVD CD-RW drive, 10/100 Ethernet, Modem and the kitchen sink.
Very nice piece of kit - not huge either considering the spec.

We as an office always used to use Dell laptops, but were asked to stop buying as we had loads of problems with the screens and shoddy build quality, they seemed very flimsy... that was a couple of years ago now... We were then told to buy toshibas, these on the whole have been very good apart from a few hard drive problems, the other machines we were buying were the Sonys, these are the doggies danglers ! no probs what so ever ... Having said that Corporate have now said that we must buy Dells again - oh no, hope they are better than they were !!!!!

Depends what you are looking for
Cheap - Go for Dell
Attractive - Go for Apple
Build Quality - Go for Panasonic/IBM
Support - Go for IBM and avoid Dell like the plague
Ruggedness - Go for Panasonoic Toughbook or if that's
too expensive get an IBM

FSC Lifebook is the way forward.
Talk to WillieF (william@ecs-uk.net) he can source them I believe.
According to independant reports, in Europe last year there were 2-3 times as many faults reported with the next best manufacturers notebook PCs compared to FSC ones. There was a report of one falling off a motorcycle couriers bike at about 80km/h in Germany, and when it was looked at, it booted up and worked first time !
I use one every day and it is superb.

Mega_stream,
What's the spec of your Armada M700. I ask this because I work for a Compaq and Toshiba service provider. Maybe all you need is an upgrade. The earliest M700's only had a 233Mhz proc. the latest ones a 1Ghz. I could upgrade yours to the latest spec at a very reasonable fee. Example as follows;
1ghz proc
(pc133)64mb onboard ram (two further expansion slots)
30Gb HDD
Multibay slot with:
DVD/CD
LS120 FDD
spare battery pack
the advantage being that you can retain all the info on your original hard drive.
Alternatively if you'd like to sell your M700, mail me with your price. I would be interested in bying it.
