Real criminals (murderers, burglars, car thieves, muggers etc) or easy targets to increase the government purses?
Guy at work, 34 mph in a 30 - £30 and 3 points
All hail the government that goes for people who can pay fines and turns a blind eye (with under staffing for the police) to the thieves that cause endless heart ache (see on here) and get off scot free....

YOu lot voted them in for a second term and now are looking to vote them in for a 3rd term so you only have yourselves to blame!
Also drink driving is a crime, so is using a cell phone and speeding, be it 31 in a 30 or 100 in a 30 speeding is speeding and it is a criminal offence whether you like it or not.
If you can't do the time don't do the crime.
Just out of curiosity when does a crime in your opinion become a crime??? just because you personally don't agree with the speed limits and penalties doesn't make it any less of a crime.

I know/socialise with a fair few coppers and they are as annoyed as everyone else that a large proportion of crime cannot be followed up. Why? Because the attention from the Government is to go after those they know that can pay and NOT those committing the more serious crimes.
I'm glad your making these comments since it's just highlighting even further what a lack of focus the government has on this issue and that something must be done by us (the voters)

I'm afraid I agree with Wurzel. Several million planks voted them in for a second term despite knowing that they were increasing everyones taxes and giving nothing in return.
Hardly surprising that they're looking for new and improved ways to screw us all.
Wouldn't mind so much if they'd thought to increase the penalty for driving without insurance to a level where the fine is actually greater than the premium, but then there's nothing in that for them.

Guys
Go to http://www.abd.org.uk/ for a drivers view on speeding and some interesting facts about the actual statistics that the "Speed Kills" campaign is based upon. Also worth joining as they seem to be the only organisation that is sticking up for the motorist.
I did see a quote from the DOT stating that speed camera detectors were costing £xx million in lost revenue! I though they were about safety and therefore less revenue=less speeding=safer roads but apprently lost revenue is more important.
And who did win Pop Idol anyway

Unfortunately the results of pop idol didn't last nearly as long as the results of the last election! May have done as much damage though! *shivers*
You all know where not to cast your vote come the next election!
Best.

I'm beginning to get fed up of this government and their money making policies.
Came out of the SPECS on the Thelwall Viaduct on Sunday only to discover a scam van parked on the bridge just after the GLF sign.
So, you get done by the SPECS set and done by the scamvan. Nice

the government are a bunch of complete *****. What about the 'safety' of people looking for speed cameras more than watching the road. We are soft-targets, forget getting someone who nicks cars, lets get the people who drive them instead

If the cameras were put outside schools etc, there would be no argument.
Injuries and lives may be saved.
But...
Urban clearways and rural dual carraigways
= money making schemes

ok what would the fine be if you get caught with a radar jammer in the car ? it is going to have to be very large if it is going to match up with the increased insurance cost over 3 years. My insurance went up by £400 for 3 points so the fine would have to be at least £1200
I don't have a radar jammer yet but am thinking of getting one (if someone could point me in the right direction)

Interesting Points - draw your own conclusion:
* There are 5,000+ fixed and mobile camera sites
* Speed camera fines generate £68 million annually, of which £54 million is spent on running costs
* The Government claims that speed cameras save 100 lives every year
* Accident casualties at 743 camera locations have increased rather than decreased, a new study shows
* This year almost three million speeding penalties are expected to be issued, up from 260,000 in 1996
* The number of traffic police has fallen by 11 per cent since 1996
* The A537 from Macclesfield to Buxton is the most dangerous road in England. There are no speed cameras on this road.

Fair point, but realistically why should I pay £1000 for my insurance, when the fine is £400?
Bit worried by TDT's comment though. 7 years down the line and you're 'beginning' to get fed up Have you not paid tax, bought petrol, paid council tax, used the NHS, sent a child to school or needed a police officer in all that time?
Not saying who people should vote for, but any sane person must surely know who NOT to vote for by now.

Once again, the Governement's road safety manifesto is focussed almost entirely on speed limit enforcement, while the real causes of road accidents (poor driving standards and poor-quality, congested roads) continue to go unchecked.
The 30-year downward trend in UK road deaths has already come to a halt by this "blinkered" attitude to road safety, and it won't be long before deaths are once again on the rise.
And how will they respond when this happens? Yep, you guessed it, more cameras, more pointlessly low speed limits and yet higher fines. And how long do you think it will be before they ban GPS detectors as well?
So they're gonna find a find a way to prevent people driving without Insurance? A noble goal, I hear you say. Trouble is, that once they've found a way to stop anyone from driving uninsured, you can bet your Granny that they will up the rate of Insurance tax "behind the scenes" (it's currently 1%), knowing that no-one can avoid it.
Like Wurzel said, YOU voted for them.

Also i thought that speed limits were set ages ago, and as roads got better and cars safer, they should be increased not reduced, except near schools etc... Most cameras iv seen are on large roads, rather than built in up areas where there is danger to children and the elderly, which is rather confusing, but how many of these are actually working....

All modern cars can stop in at least 2/3rds of the stopping distances quoted in the highway code book. (Clarkson did a test and proved it!)
Therefore all road law at the moment in the uk is a load of BOLL*X!!!!!!
Also the 70mph motorway limit was also based on an Ford Anglia.....which at the time wont have been far from the cars top speed.
Modern day cars can travel at far higher speeds far more safely than the old anglia could travel at 70mph.
Why cant the govenment wake up and use data from modern day cars when setting speed limits etc???
Answer......because it wont generate half as much money for them to line their pockets and pension funds with!

When are the a$$hole politicians actually going to pay attention to the statistics that they role out on every other occassion. Fact : speed is only one of many factors in road accidents and is not the biggest factor by any stretch of the imagination - other than in the imagination of a politician with pound signs in front of his face.
I'm getting more and more pissed off with it......
