welcome
you're looking at a 94-96 model for that price, problems? make sure the gearbox and engine sound ok, knocking and bad gear changes only spell trouble, imports will have more goodies on them than a UK car, though insurance will be higher on an import

erm, depends how you drive i managed 50 miles to half a tank at the weekend should get at least 250-300 to a tank normally
insurance, have a look in the dedicated forum on here, tescos, liverpool & victoria seem popular, adrian flux might be worth a shot too

Wouldn't early WRXs of that age have the smaller petrol tank?
Be fussy - there's plenty of choice of cars of that age. The more standard the better in my book unless you can find out what garage has done any work / fitted mod's to the car.
Chris.

I wouldnt just stick to the WRX wagons, id also look at the UK wagons too.
The WRX wagon has 220ps on 100 ron fuel (approx 218bhp) v 208bhp in the uk car, ok the wrx has more goodies as standard, but it also needs 100 ron fuel, which is not available in the uk (so you need the highest octane fuel plus octane booster).
The insurance will be more (depending who your with insurance wise) over a UK car, but the biggest advantage of the UK car is the fact it has a bigger turbo over the wrx wagon so if you want to mod the car, you have a good starting point
