Question New Scooby owner looking for advice

Hi all, I`ve recently (3 weeks) become the proud owner of a 2001 WRX Scooby and was looking for some advice ? I bought the car off a friend who informed me that the malfunction indicator lamp (orange engine warning lamp) kept coming on and had done for some time . The main dealers in Oxfordshire couldn`t put it right for some reason, where he lived and when I took the car to Welchs in Cambs they removed the light, but it has come on again since. Has anyone experienced this before ? Also I reckon I`m only getting around 19 / 20 mpg even taking it reasonably easy on the second tank, is this fairly normal ?
Cheers all

You need a decent auto diagnostician, which the main dealers should be, to actually go through the service manual procedure for each fault that is stored in the ECU.

Is the exhaust modified?

Other possibilities with the low economy include EGT probe, lambda sensor. But the code that will be stored in the ECU should reveal all to someone that has a clue.

Has the car had any modifications done to it?

Most common CEL (Check Engine Light) is the 02 sensor which triggers if the car has had a full decat exhaust fitted as the ecu detects that the cats aren't operating efficiently - there are none! If the dealer resets the ecu it will definately trigger again although there are ways round this.

If the car doesn't have any mods could be a number of things but probably a dodgy sensor - any dealer or specialist will be able to read the fault code that the ecu gives to diagnose the problem.

Hope this is of some help.

Chris

Thanks for the advice I will get it booked into main dealer to do diagnostics on it. The exhaust to my knowledge has not been modified.
What kind of mpg on average should I expect if not hammering it all the time ?
Cheers Chris

The car hasn`t had any modifications apart from prodrive gearbox linkage and cosmetically prodrive front lights for bugeye model (3 pronged lights for want of a better description !),the rest as standard. I will book the car into local main dealers to check sensors.
Cheers for your advice Chris.

Had it come on and dealer said it was a Cam sensor going outside its parameters, but it was re-set and stayed off. Also had it come on when Oxygen sensor on centre CAT failed due to propshaft rubbing cable through - but it ran like a pig and needed a new sensor.
