Passenger in the front. As an example..on trips to the Ring when someone is going with a full car of passengers, people blag the front passenger seat by saying 'Can I ride shotgun'

Comes from the old days when geezer in the wild west would be driving the stage coach / wagon and nobby dee would be sat next to him as look out with the shotgun shooting the pesky indians and such like.

Scooby Senior
When entering a full car as a non driver. First shout is "Shotgun" for the front passenger seat. Second shout is "No Bitch" to avoid the middle rear seat.

Amazing what you can find on Google! It looks like it does refer to the guy who protected stagecoaches during the days of the pony express in the 1880's and 1890's in the US, but interestingly the term was not used then. It seems to have come from literature and films from 1921 onwards, i.e. after the days of the stagecoach were long gone.
