Anyone ever tried putting dry ice (solid CO2 pellets) on the intercooler to cool the charge down?

I'm thinking of a fine mesh bag of some sort to hold it. Fortunately I can get it at work.

Pros/cons anyone?

Errrm, will you be sucking carbon dioxide into the engine as it is quite well know for putting out fires? Probably not in reality, I dunno!

AFAIK air going through the cooler fins doesn't go into the engine?

I could be wrong here tho'. Help please.

I sometimes put ice cubes on my intercooler between runs at The Pod, can't say it had any noticeable effect though.
My best time actually came long after the ice had run out!
It can't hurt though, although it could be argued the air flow will be restricted somewhat as less air is able to pass due to the pellets.

The Intercooler is separate from the air-intake to the engine, so (in theory!) you could stick a plank over it and the engine would still suck in the same amount of air.

Dry ice would cool the intercooler down, but I bet it melts pretty damn fast inside a Scooby engine! Of course, all that melted dry ice has to go somewhere and it could get pulled forward to the air-intake, but I imagine it would be pulled down, out of the bottom of the engine bay.

Stef, rather than putting it in between runs, have you tried putting it in just before a run?

Lightbulb

cheers for the info chaps.

Especially Barry for finding the previous thread.

See if I cart round a huge strofoam box full of dry ice in the boot, I can fill it up regularly. As long as I don;t suffocate (I've got a 4 door so doubt much CO2 would come through to the passenger comapartment.

Yup, definately lost the plot......
