Calling all standard scooby owners……
I have seen many threads on here that complaining about blown engines and the like. I thought I would start a thread for all STANDARD scooby owners that have NOT experienced any terminal engine problems.
It all starts here……
My names Phill and I have a drink problem ……… sorry wrong board.
I have had a standard silver MY00 for a few months now and love it. 35K on the clock and I am more than happy with it.
Phill

Mine no probs...starts everytime, smooth and no strange noises.
The whole reason the ECU is set to detuning the engine in standard map is better reliability and reasonable fuel consumption. Surely the wacky mods you see some people put on theirs plus the equally wacky driving style that comes with modding can't help reliability.
Stiil, Subaru are well aware of how popular the scoobs are for post market mods and the engines lend themselves to reasonable levels of modification.
However I think some folks don't consider the science involved and throw engine mods in whilst taking power/torque figures at face value. It ain't that simple...

Think you'll find that plenty of non-standard cars haven't blown up either....
Mark - UK 98 Turbo (60000 miles standard + 60000 miles not really standard .... )

Mines not exactly standard but its not got bonkers mods on it either (De-cat, K&N panel and TEK2) and have to say its been absolutely fine.
MPG is much better than expected. Parts aren't silly money once you know where to look. Servicing is expensive at the dealers but all dealers are expensive IMHO and specialists are usually cheaper and do a better job. Insurance is quite high but what do you expect.
Interior is obviously not Germanic in origin but at least its not french. DIY oil change is brown trousers time when you re-start but trust in the lord of SNet and your 85% likely to survive.
/Edit - MY00 Sonic Blue (best colour for sure) from Dublin @ 53K

What do you call bonkers/wacky mods ? - I think there's a big difference between 'highly modified - but carefully' and 'slapped together without too much thought'

92,000 miles here. Standard car. Uses no oil, starts everytime. Always Run up and Down. Had usual ie Discs, pads, shocks etc. But as for reliability 100%. I Never rape the Engine thou, Motorway sit at 80 mph. To many miles to start modding now thou.

Shrop - too many miles - Reckon you're right wrt motorway though - 'generally', standard imprezas seem to lean out at top speed - causing 'bangs'

I think Panel filter, decat and remap can't be ever classed as wacky mods.
Good to see some people still have standard cars but with a bit of careful and gentle fettling the cars can return so much more and still be as reliable.

I'm sorry to disagree with you old boy, but by de-catting your entire exhaust and remapping the ECU to add more boost does make the car less reliable than a standard unmolested engine.
Wheels, spoliers, lights etc etc obviously will have no effect (except for perhaps water in the boot after you've fitted the spoiler) but how can anyone say that engine mods will not cause any long term problems.
And yes my Scoob did have a Full de-cat & TEK3 and ran sweet as a nut for many many miles, but I never ever drove it flat out for fear of going bang.
