Angry Has anyone ever bought a 2nd hand MAF sensor...

and regretted doing so?

When I was told the cost of a new one I almost fell over backwards.

(BTW mine's a MY97).

Have you got a quote from the stealership? Sometimes they try and sell you half the blooming engine with it (airbox bits you don't need). Check the cost you were quoted is just for the MAF sensor an dnothing else.

Trouble is on early cars you have to buy the whole tube and sensor thing (£250 ish)but on later cars you can just buy the sensor element (£80ish)itself.

I bought a second hand one last year for my MY96 because I had an ongoing misfire problem. A lot of people jump on the (it must be the maf) bandwagon but I reckoned that amount of money to just discount it was daft.

As it happened nothing changed and it ended up being the coil packs (also difficult to diagnose). Are you replacing it faulty or are you fault diagnosing? Just thinking you could borrow my spare if you wanted?

Ritchie.

That's very decent of you but I've just had a diagnostic test and I've been told that the fault code indicated a knackered MAF. I was expecting it to be about 65 notes but apparently that's for the "version five".

No probs mate, out of interest when you say diagnostic test do you mean that your car threw its cel or did you get it tested at a dealer or elsewhere?

I've read on here before, that grade a sell maf's that are tested but I'm not sure how thats done as many seem to believe a maf can fail without showing any signs. Quite a few people seem to use mafs as a service item but my wallet is not that deep unfortunately! I instead invested in a lambda link and knocklink to see what was happening with relation to fuel mix and am satisfied things are not running lean - but then i'm fairly standard.

Ritchie.

CEL on every morning and then goes out after about 3-4 miles. Had a dealer check it out last week and was told that the MAF had gone AWOL. Funny that (although cost to replace isn't) because my, "Unplug MAF and see if engine stalls" test suggested that the MAF was OK, but I realise that others have mentioned that these hometests aren't infallible.
