Question Boxer engine sound

Why do boxer engines sound like they do? The Scooby has four cylinders but sound totally different to any in-line four, and the Porsche sounds different to any in-line or 'V' 6 cylinder, why?

Uneven length headers
Thats what gives the scoob its distinctive sound
(unless of course you have a JDM MY03/04 STi and then it just sounds like a jet fighter )

Do you know if that is specific to the scoob or is it the same for Porsches or all boxer engines?

Its not specific to anything as far as i know, my MY03 JDM STi doesnt have this sound due to the even length headers that the car comes with out of the factory, a uk MY03 STi has uneven length headers still. Im not sure what the likes of the VW Beetle (original version) comes with, if that has even or uneven headers, nor what Porsches have... but by the looks, for more power, most people go for even length so that could say something...

...aslo they have a 4-1 exhaust manifold compared to 4-2-1 on normal cars, and also the scoobys manifold is unequeal, which helps to give that flat four burble...nice

Thanks for the answers so far. My friend with whom I'm having this discussion says that old Beetles had a pair of equal length 2-1 manifolds, so were really confused now

but a Beetle doesn't sound like a scoob?? and they're air cooled anyway so sound different again??

I think Porsches have equal lengths but are mostly 6 cyls (unless old) so again sound different.

I always liked the sound of the Audi Quattro 5 cylinder under load different again and slow by todays standards but ahead of it's time and laying some decent foundations.

When I hear a Golf GTI or a BMW with a oversized exhaust I can only laugh about the sound (and the driver who gets a kick by it).

Porsche and Subaru boxers, that is something else.

Greetings,
SRX!
