Question

I recon @ 45K as well - UK car service intervals @ 7.5 7.5x6=45 (did it on the calculator, not trying to show off my CSE in Mafs.

Had a bad experience with one going on a Sierra (company car and not my choice) due for service @ 60K i think, went to 61K and it snapped - three valves and one piston later...........

It is 45k (miles) which is 72k km.

You should change the alternator and AC belts as well.

Pete

My car is 3 years old in August with 28,000 miles - the dealer says the cam-belt should be changed at 3 years (or 45,000) - should I get it changed when the milage is low?

Regards

I understand that it isn't just down to the mileage. The age is a factor. The belt is exposed tht elements which degrades the material and can make 'em more likely to snap. Might be worth calling Subaru UK to check. I realise that it is not cheap to get 'em done but the concequenses of not are far worse it it snaps.

Hope this helps.

Get it changed as a snapped belt at high revs 1 week after your warranty runs out is going to cost you a lot of money.

Lightbulb

can anyone clear this up. i was told that if the timimg went on the flat four that it wouldn't be to serious as the valves can't fall into the head?

..valves not falling into head...
Depends what fails - if the timing belt snaps, the valves stay stationary (and fixed) and the pistons continue up and down. So pistons hit open valves and it all gets messy v.quick whether the engine is flat or 'upright'. I suppose there is a failure mode of the valve springs/collets (yes I had a MKII escort!) failing and then the valves could drop into an 'upright' engine...but this is a pretty rare failure mode comapred with timing belts breaking. Most valves are not vertically 'inline' with the piston travel anyway (don't know about Scoobs) so I wouldn't even like my pistons to hit 'free' valves

I think the question is does the piston travel and the valve travel overlap. If it does not there is no problem, as for example in one of my previous volvos (say that very quietly!)the cambelt snapped but only difficulty was the engine wouldn't start (surprise surprise)

But in the impreza engine?
