About a month ago a woman was standing by the entrance to a shopping centre in Nottingham, passing out flyers to all the women going in.

The woman had written the flyer herself to tell about an experience she had so that she might warn other women

The previous day, this woman had finished shopping and went out to her car and discovered that she had a flat tyre. She got the jack out of the boot and began to change the flat.

A nice man dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, "I noticed you're changing a flat tyre, would you like me to take care of it for you?" the woman was grateful for his offer and accepted his help.

They chatted amicably while the man changed the tyre, and then put the flat and jack in the boot, shut it and dusted off his
hands.

The woman thanked him profusely, and as she was about to get in her car the man told her he had left his car around the other side of the shopping centre and asked if she would mind giving him lift to his car.

She was a little surprised and asked why his car was the other side. He explained that he had seen an old friend in the centre that he hadn't seen for some time and they'd had a bite to eat and a look around the shops for a while.

He got turned round in the shopping centre and came out the wrong exit and now he was running late and his car was round the other side of the centre.

The woman hated to tell him no because he had just rescued her from having to change the wheel all by herself, but she felt
uneasy, then she remembers seeing the man put his briefcase in her boot before shutting it and before he asked her for a ride to his car, but she had remembered just one last thing she needed to buy.

She said she would only be a few minutes, he could sit down in her car and wait for her, and she would be as quick as she could be.

She hurried into the shopping centre and told a security guard what had happened, the guard came out to the car with her,
but the man had left, she unlocked the boot, took his locked briefcase to the police station.

The police opened it {ostensibly to look for ID so that they could return it to the man}, what they found was Rope, Duct tape and Knives, when the police checked the tyre, there was nothing wrong with it, the air had simply been let out.

Its obvious what the mans intentions were and had carefully thought them out in advance. The woman was blessed to have escaped harm. How much worse could it have been if she had children with her and got them to wait in the car or had a baby in a car seat?

This woman told this experience on the flyer she was passing out so that other women could be warned.

PLEASE forward this on, it may save a life, he could be in any shopping centre.

I actually heard that a similar incident happened in Bluewater. My wife is now cautious of shopping there on her own.

Sure we've seen this around before. Don't want to mention ponds and submerged Imprezas again, but I'm certain that this is one of these tales that's been doing the rounds recently.

Might be worth checking with PC Farren.....

Some ******* outthere has changed the details to Nottingham in order to kick up a storm, this story is bull**** and spreading fast! so much so I had a girl I know start telling me the story, I finished it off for her, she was amazed, I then went on to tell her its true origins, she had found out by word of mouth, so that should give you an idea how widespread this is!

Full info here,

ps. second time Ive had to post this link!

This has been floating about the internet in various guises since 1997! Clicky

While I appreciate the sentiment it is trying to convey - i.e. be on your guard (men and women) these kinds of stories posted as fact can do more harm than good!

Unhappy

I'm quite happy to remove it though the other half sent it to me, she working for a large organisation, though this company has taken this seriously to the point that they sent out memos to all staff & have got a tyre company in to check all their wheels/tyres & pads/discs are OK FOC.......Something which the HR department underttok

God knows how many tens of thousands this company employs.....shame it wasn't us doing the checking....

The officer does exist; as does the phone number but it was posted as more of a warning than lets check all the facts.....

We are not having a personal dig - as I stated, I fully support the sentiment behind it. It is common sense, be careful of people you don't know when you are in potentially vunerable situations (be you male or female).

However, some of us have been online for too many years and you get to see the same old thing going round and round packaged slightly differently (bit like the flu really). We would like to see these Urban Legends die a graceful death!

Personally I'd take more note of a direct warning from the Police rather than these "friend of a friend" type stories. Whenever you hear things like that, snopes.com is a good place to visit as a first point of call to see if there may be some truth or if it is an old re-hash!

There seems to be something with the internet that make people more ready to belive things it seems to me, yet if somebody told yourself the same thing in the pub you would just think it was a joke. Again not having a go here but we have had the Cameras on the motorway hoax floating about on this board last week, and again, five minutes of research and it was shown to be false.

If people just pause for a moment when they get such information and maybe have a quick look on the internet they it can save a lot of time.

As a final note, I'd say leave the Topic up by maybe avoid the "TRUE CRIME" bit!!

Excellent advice OllyK, if you hear literally any story you think has even the slightest whiff of bs run it through snopes' search machine, its very powerfull and usually yields what your looking for.

Its also worth pointing out that not everything on snopes.com is false! it does have some "true" stuff on it

I hate to see people getting worried or distressed by stuff like this, especially when its people I know
