Had a feeling that a while ago you had a problem with a squealing brake at fairly low speeds. Got the same in my 03WRX and it's driving me nuts (everyone looks as I drive past). I'm taking the car into the dealers tomorrow to get it sorted, but I just wondered what was found to be causing yours? Just so I can point the gormless mechanics in the right direction you know!

just got mine cured (MY99)
squealing brakes at low speeds, even had people holding their jaws like in a dentist surgery as I passed.
REPLACED THE FRONT PADS....
I had worked out which corner it was by playing with the eleccy windows. established mine was nearside front, so changed the front pads...
which was nice, hope this helps.

Andy

of course, it might not be that, but it definately was the case with my car...

Sorry I forgot to say that mine squeal when I'm NOT braking - if I gently press the brake pedal whilst rolling the noise stops. Also if I slightly lift the handbrake whilst moving it stops too. Weird!

Thats a good point.

I changed my pads around 6 weeks ago, and this has started about 3 weeks ago.

They're not expensive pads mind you, just got them to tide me over till summit better came along.

Get what you pay for i suppose.

the brake pad compound must be very hard and not agreeing with your discs.

this can shorten the life of your discs sometimes

Mine goes away if i brake.

It's when i'm driving with my foot off the brake pedal that this happens.

This is exactly what mines does!!! I never found a cure and reluctantly accepted that it must just be the pads. It comes and goes and its very annoying but its usually just a case of, 'they all do that sir' I think the best you can do is ask them to give the brakes a good clean to ensure there is no grit, etc Its a lot worse for a few days if I boot it (i.e. lots of braking) but then don't give the brakes a good while to cool before stopping.

it helps by cushioning the pad & therefore stops the pads oscillating noise whilst they just slightly touch the disc

Pugoetru - what was involved/how do you do it?

If I can do it easily myself then I won't bother taking it to the dealers.

My MR2 used to do this all the time - changing the pads cured it for a while, the copper grease stuff also cured it for a while, but it always came back.

Was the caliper in the end causing the pads to stay out and touch the disc slightly. New caliper would sort it, thats my guess.

You can buy copaslip at halfords/motorworld etc anywhere.

You could also try champfering (sp?) the leading edge of the pad slightly if copaslip doesn't work.

Thumbs up

And I thought it was just my MY00 that did it!

Looks like I'll have to find the German equivalent of Copaslip (or whatever).

Thanks for the info...

Cheers

the copaslip will eventully harden with the heat & thus it will lose its cushioning effect, mines started squeeking again after about 20 months, just scrape the old copaslip off & re-apply & bobs your aunt fanny

You might as well spray WD40 on them-they don't work that well anyway!
