Came out to my car this morning, noticed a trail of oil on the road leading up to my car. Quick check underneath and my Halfrauds oil filter had decided to partially unscrew itself after 2 months of good service. Checked the oil and I needed 4 litres to bring up to max!

I'd checked the oil on the previous Saturday and it was fine, no signs of leaks etc. Got to work and there was a huge pool of oil and a trail leading off so I'd driven the 45 miles home with oil pissing out

Engine sounds fine, no rattles so I hope I got away with it.

Anyone got a lockwire kit up for sale?

james, exactly the question I was asking myself while lying under my car in my work gear.

Lesson learned, don't substitute convenience for effectiveness.

Have you ever closley looked at the Halfords part next to an OEM subaru one? To be honest they're probably made at the same place? I think it was a halfords one i put on any way? No problems what so ever. Just make sure it's on tight!

Thats a nasty shock Notrev, hope there is no engine damage.

I've used Halfords filters in the past with no problem, maybe it needs a bit more tweak when you tighten it, hand tightening is ok as long as you really put a bit of weight behind it. I have recently taken to using Subaru ones again though.

Actually, I didn't blame anything, but it is the first time I've ever had this happen on any of the 30-odd vehicles I've owned over the last 11 years

You need to explain that statement, jjones. I can't see the connection!

its just another one of his random bubmlings - occasionally something he spouts has relevance to the thread, but its just coincidence

I had virtually the same thing happen to me with a Fram Oil Filter

Had about 4 trails of oil down the drive, and off into the distance

Got an OE one, problem solved

Tnx Buzz

That sounds like a good warning then-use OEM to be safe.
