The only thing you would save is perhaps a small bit on the insurance and initial outlay for the car. The rest it would have similar mpg, same servicing etc.

The earlier WRX didnt have the same power output as the STI if you check out section 2.1.1 it tells you the year and engine PS. PS is similar to bhp accept its slightly more.
For example 280PS = 276bhp, if you knock 4 off the figures listed you wont be a million miles away to convert PS to bhp.

The comment about the bank balance was to do with doing 0-60 runs as it takes its toll on clutchs and transmissions (same with any impreza turbo) and they aint cheap to replace

well, i've just sold my new Freelander and I'm looking at an STI,
but I don't really want a car thats going to blow up in a few months and cost me a packet. I had a MR2 turbo about a year ago and now I want something a bit faster. Its just I don't know loads about Subaru engines...other than their fu*#ing fast....! ! !

they are hard as nails when looked after correctly i.e. correct fueling, gauges and displays to keep an eye on things, regular servicing using quality products.
Don't forget, these engines were massivly over engineered and then detuned to around 280 - 300bhp.
Get an STI, you won't be dissapointed.

I'd like to add, Get an STi, get a knocklink and possibly get it remapped. Just to be safe.
And remember, that although an STi WILL do 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds, as Crisp says, your clutch won't last long with that sort of abuse.
I would strongly reccomend you test drive a few different scoobs: the experience between a UKTurbo, UK WRX, JDM WRX, STi, STi Type R and something like a P1 can be amazingly different: THey are different cars to do different jobs. Just looking at the power output doesn't really tell you that much.

Sub 5 seconds for an STI but not advised unless you have shares/own a transmission and clutch company or a big bank balance .
You can tell by looking at the model code which is stamped on the VIN plate. teh VIN plate is located in the engine bay, passenger side next to the top of the suspension housing.
You can match the model code against ones listed in the SIDC faq www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm section 2.1.1
