Freeze it is the way , perhaps try one of those pipe freezing kits
for plumbing (but test it first to make sure it doesn't change the colour ). Or just another thought try a iron (not too hot) with a cloth / piece of kitchen paper between it and the carpet and see if you can get the gum to stick to the cloth .....don't melt your carpet though !
