I have been offered a brand new WRX for £18000 - this will no doubt drop over the next few months, and hopefully they will chuck in 0% etc, as the dealers try to clear their forecourts.

Is this a better deal than a MY99 with PPP 26,000miles for £12,500?

In my opinion the front-end looks ok on the current car, and the interior looks a whole lot better (after all that is what the driver is looking at most of the time - except hopefully the road! ).

Is the current car less powerful / worse to drive than the MY99?

Also those of you with Mystic Meg type powers, what would a desperate MY01 owner with a 30,000 mile car take for their car after March 2003?

IMHO the MY99 with PPP will definitely be much quicker than the std WRX. The WRX is much comfier but so is a BMW.

Pesimistic view is that the MY99 may be worth £8k in 2yrs and the WRX will be worth £12K so you'll lose more with the WRX. Then you'll need to spend £500 on Morettes on the WRX and £1600 on the PPP to make it able to overtake GTi's/Robin Reliants's.

Do the 'math' as they say.

Depends what you want. MY99 with PPP definitely quicker. WRX will probably depreciate quickly. If its a bargain you are after check this car in the for sale section:

RB5 is pretty rare so should depreciate less (hopefully, seeing as I own one!!!) Most of the magazine tests done on the RB5 raved about them at the time. No end of info available on here if you are not familiar with it.

Steve.

Floyd,

from what you are saying the 'math' makes a brand new WRX worth it if it is sub £16000.
Also I did a test drive in A new WRX PPP last weekend, is it usual to have a slight nausious feeling following a 'spirited' test drive?
Is it down, to the car, the springs, or (most probably) the driver?

If the general consensus from the industry and buyers is that the bug eye is going to be the unloved black sheep of the family, surely used prices are going to be even lower once the new shape appears.

Then again, new STI UK cars minus the Prodrive body bits are still shifting at my local dealer, so someone will still love the looks of these.

After owning an Audi, I found the 99MY and an 01 WRX to be like chalk and cheese. I bought a 99MY, but you need to make up your mind what's important to you as the WRX is better in some respects.

However, if you buy at the right price (I bought mine at £10500 privately when dealers wanted a minimum of £13995) then you are not taking a massive risk are you ?

Can you get the 99 PPP for £11500?

WRX is more grown up like the later Golfs but the classics are more focused drivers cars IMHO.

You want speed go with the MY99 ppp. The MY02 will be slower obviously without the ppp and because it is much heavier. You say you like the interior, if you are really going for interior, get a beemer. If the seat on the MY99 is really uncomfortable get a recaro. IMHO go with the classic who cares how much you get on resale, they are japanese cars, you can never expect a higher resale except with a 22b or similar limited editions. Just enjoy the car don't even think about when it is time to re-sell. MY99 all the way.

Looks like the MY99 seems best - will try to test drive both this weekend for a comparison.
I went from a Mk2 Golf to a Mk3 previously and the difference in handling etc was huge.

Just need to get the cash now!!
