Have looked through the Speedtrap web site but still not 100% clear what is a better option - Jammer or Detector.

- Both seem to be "semi-legal"
- Both will alert you about a radar / speed camera
- Jammer obviously gives an extra benefit of jamming the radar while you slow down and switch the device off to allow the police to take a reading
- Not sure if the jammer will actually jam a speed camera? That would mean that you don't need to slow down at all (?)
- Valentine One is recommended as the most effective detector (but surprise-surprise it's the most expensive as well). What about the others?
- What is the most effective Jammer?
- How do they compare on price?

Any views?

Detectors are 100% legal - recent benchmark case sorted this out. Jammers are only semi-legal, and will only work against coppers holding guns.

Dunno about the rest.

I choose the detector route and I am having my Valentine One fitted (properly) in a weeks time.

I've seen one used plenty of times and the GATSO advanced detection has impressed me enough to buy one. Rumour has it that V1's are capable of picking up the new SPECS IR camera's too.

Not that I condone speeding, it's just nice to know if you are being watched and not to let a GATSO catch you doing +48 mph on a 40!

I'll let you know the results.

Tim.

I use as Snooper SD815i radar/laser detector, marketed as the only one in the UK that picks up all radar bands, including mini Gatsos (Ku band) and I find it OK.

The Valentine One performed best (by a big margin) on a mag test I read about six months ago but a friend of mine has just ordered a BEL 999 (I think) because he read it performs well. You do get what you pay for mostly.

Radar (and laser) detectors are only of use if the traps use it (fixed site Gatsos, mobile Gatsos, etc) but plod uses Vascar, Truvelo and other systems that give no warning whatever. Detectors are useless against them - there's no substitute for vigilence.

I wouldn't touch a jammer with a barge pole. If plod points a radar gun at you and can't get a reading, he'll pull you anyway to find out why. A local guy (Scotland) two years ago had his jammer confiscated, was fined 500 pounds and got six points for using one. Can't comment on laser jammers which might be more effective because plod usually uses them from overhead bridges with no access to the main road. You pays your money ....

MTR,

Can't think why laser detectors would be illegal. What law do you think applies to them?

Cool

This logic has been covered before but laser jammers are illegal because they obstruct the law (in simple terms!)
