Welcome to Scoobynet Caprice!
May i ask a couple of questions
When you say 'revs' - do you mean that the revs increase out of proportion to the vehicle speeds - revs increase faster than normal accelleration in 5th?

How old is the car/how many miles has it and or the clutch done?

Hi Caprice. Excellent profile.

Sounds like it could be your clutch. The gearstick shouldn't have any effect on this as a quick shifter simply moves the fulcrum on the gear selector. Does the car accelerate normally when you floor it in first and second?

Start engine and keep hand brake full on. Put into say 3rd or 4th gear and let out clutch slowly. If engine revs and car stays still then clutch is slipping. If so you will need to get sorted sooner rather than later. Clutch slip always reveals itself in higher gears first. Hope it's something simpler. David.

Guys,
thanks for all the help, I'll give it a go tonight, as long as I don't have to get my hands too dirty

Cool

Hi Caprice, presume you go to Silsoe College?
Oh those were the days (a very long time ago....)
I work in Maulden if you need any help on the car during the day.

Is it expensive?

Oh dear - It will get worse to the point where you will stop moving. Once it is slipping, it will wear out quite quickly. You should get it (professionally) sorted a.s.a.p

i've got the same problem - started sunday, lots of revs, very little forward momentum; how many miles can be driven before momentum stops altogether - and any way to preserve the clutch?

regards

You may be able to get a few more miles on a slipping clutch by dumping (gently) rather than slipping the clutch home. Also don't accelerate quickly and try not to change gear.

Not a lot of fun!

thanx for the info - I've got a 50km journey to the nearest decent garage on Monday to get the clutch fixed (oh, and a short shift gearstick fitted whilst you're at it). Here's hoping I don't end up being towed by the AA

regards
