Ok, so I've always wondered this... If someone bought the rights to manufacture the Classic Impreza, how feasible would it be to bring it up to today's standards? And...would you buy one?

Now if it was made with a carbon tub in the S5/S6 style it would sell loads. obviously with all of the modern creature comforts available but not mandatory.

With the amount of interchangeable parts throughout the Subaru range, I expect it would be possible to find a good percentage of new parts to build a classic, the challenge would be finding a shell and some of the more age specific items such as interior parts and trims. Engines and many drivetrain parts are still readily available.

If its like the Aston DB5 and Porsche 911 'new re-imaginings' it would cost £80-100k in relative terms and no-one would buy one because you could still buy a mint P1 or even 22B for less ?

Thinking along the lines of how the VW Beetle was produced in Brazil.

But how many mod cons would you want / need? Out of all the features available to you today with modern cars, how many of those do you use regularly?

I think I'd be satisfied with air con, Sat-Nav, sun roof, electric mirrors, modern lights, and a rear window wiper! 'Upgrade' the engine and ECU' with standard modern tech too. All that for under £30k new? Basic, but fun and fast.

I don't think anyone would be able to do it for £30k. Maybe £50k with a small profit but it wouldn't be viable.

I actually think the 'retro e-motor' is probably more likely for the classic Impreza in 15 years time, with a flat four sound generator.

was done by a fella over here in N.Ireland seeing as mk2 escorts are still massive on irish rallying scene. Anyhow he shipped a full mk2 shell to china and they reproduced it and shipped them back. Not sure if he is still doing it but by all accounts it was very successful

Pretty sure I know someone who had one built using one of those shells, rally spec too, had an issue with the brake bias (nothing to do with the shell mind you!) and stuffed it into a wall on the first rally he entered. Ouch!
