Default Help! EJ20 won't start :'(

Hi all

Without boring you all, my brother and I swapped the engine in my gc8. I have a spanking remanufactured complete block.

Anyway, after many blood, sweat and tears the engine found its new home and is completely plumbed and wired .

It's all been primed and it's Showtime. Except there's no show. She turns over but just doesn't want to start.

My brother is a mechanic and helped me get the engine in. He's left the country and left me with finishing her off. I thought I done a great job up until now.

I hope that this is some expertise here that'll pinpoint my issue and make me feel like an idiot.

Uploaded a video of the car trying to start. Link is below

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. I shall forever be in your debt.

The fact that it let a cough out of it means you can't be that far away you need to explain everything you've tried and checked.

It's such a tease. The only thing I've done since wiring and plumbing is priming. I done that by removing the sparks, throttle down and turn the key until the oil pressure light goes out.

I've no experience in diagnosing but it sounds like one cylinder ignites.

Other than that, I've not done anything but get really fed up lol. I've not really checked anything since. What would be the first thing(s) you'd check?

I suspected it would be the HT leads just chose not to say anything in case I steered the convo in the wrong direction .I'll have to play around with them.

Is there a "smart" way of figuring out what cylinder/spark plug they should go to or just a game of trial and error?

The cars 1996 so doesn't have odb2. I'm have to connect the two diagnostic clips under the steering rack and count the amount of times the check engine light flashes but there's no codes .

I have a newage, but as far as I know they just go directly to each cylinder. So rear 2 connections on the coil pack go to each rear cylinder, and fronts to front.

Not too sure what the different between coil and coilpack is but I have one on each spark plug.

Actually done the new age coil pack conversion so each coilpack has its own ground. This was done ages ago and worked a treat

If that's the case just check they're plugged in correctly. On a newage, Black plugs are rear and white are front.

It can be easy to mix the crank sensor plug with one of the injector plugs, both the same, worth a check.

Did the re con engine come with the crank sprocket already fitted or are you using your old one?
if it came on the new engine it could be different to your original one as there are a few different types.
so it thinks the timing is out.
Ive had the same problem in the past.

Did you fit the cylinder heads yourself - if so have you got the camshafts in the correct positions, as in :
L/H Inlet cam to passenger side top
L/H exhaust cam passenger side lower
R/H Inlet drivers side top
R/H exhaust drivers side lower.

If you have the cams mixed up, the cam belt timing marks will look ok but will never start.

Hope its something simple in your case though.
