Hi wondering if anyone could help bought a jdm wrx sti 2001 2 weeks ago all is fine except earlier when i hit 6000rpm the engine light flashed for literally a split second pretty much in time with the gear change light i had set for 6000rpm it done this twice to me. The oil, water levels etc are all fine any help would be great thanks
it happened twice at 6k then i turned the gear change light off and tried it once more and it didn't seem to happen i just wanted to try and get some advice before i kept on trying
Set the change light to 3000 (or any other figure) and see if it comes on at the same time again it may have been set some how to come on at the same time. I run a GEMS ECU on my bugeye and the mapper set it so the engine light comes on at max power.
Has the car been mapped?? Is the light been set up by a mapper for when it detects engine knock?? Had the same thing set up on my old Evo 7 which was mapped by the legend JGM when the engine detected knock(crap petrol usually) the check engine light would flash when driving hard!!
ok yes i will try setting another rpm. It was only recently imported so the history is all Japanese the guy at the garage said he thought it was "tuned" a little didn't mention a mapp so could do with going to get it checked and tested i guess. And the light that showed was like a engine/gearbox shape just left of the shift light
little update... changing the rpm on light makes no difference.. happened again at just past 6k only in 2nd gear tho. And i did fill up with tesco momentum today instead of shell V-power which i was previously using as scoobyboy did mention fuel. Going to see a mate tomorrow who is hot on the scoobys. Many thanks for the replies
what like a common fault with the sensor? would it be worth replacing it?
no, Bugeyes suffer from a weird eml flash from time to time if given the beans,
it is supposedly down to poor shielding for the cam sensor from interference iirc.
My bugeye used to flash eml sometimes when driven hard. Was faulty neutral possition switch. Comon fault and i lived with it for 5years
This ^^^^^
First port of call would be to change the nps if it's flashing when your changing gear.
I had it on my last sti and was picked up during a mapping session
ok thanks mine only flashes the once though and it did that on 2 sperate occasions but when driving today it was all fine no light atall think ill just get it checked over for peace of mind
drove it today it seemed fine no light ... norman dog did what did you do with yours replace the nps?
Will only happen now and then if is nps mate. As i said once mapped my bugeye done it now and then and i just lived with it for 5years without any related problems
