Default not sure what went wrong

I have a 92 Subaru liberty LX and it recently broke down, I'm not sure why, it started smelling really bad, the temp gauge went up and up and when I stopped it it wouldn't start up again, not even with a rolling start, please help

Another vote for headgasket failure leading to the engine killing itself.

Budget a minimum of around A$4000..........

Haha $4000 that's 4 times what I paid for it, first car and all. It didn't have any water in the radiator when I opened it up.
