How many people do you have so far and how many packets have been processed by SIDC to date?

I don't think it's been posted up here before...

Anyway, a few of us are processing SETI packets using the screensaver for our PCs (it's better than the usual flying windows!!), or versions for UNIX/NT machines etc, and contributing our packets processed to an SIDC group.

If anyone out there is interested in helping out, then you can find out more at

Only 26 people so far, and about 590 packets

We need about 1100 packets to get into the top 100, so another 20 or 30 people should be enough, or someone with a lot of packets already processed

Anyone out there with a powerful Unix or SG machine who could donate some processor time ?

There's a network of 30 powermac G3 computers at work lying idle at night with T1 connections to the internet. Only problem is I'm a freelance and if caught installing unauthorised software etc, etc...

WV,

just try it one to start with

It doesn't need a fast internet connection. It only takes a few seconds to download the packet of data, then spends between 10 and 30 hours processing the data in the background, and then a few seconds to upload the results once it's complete.

PS remember your booking form for Knockhill!!

Cool

Just thought I'd restore this old thread, as we are now in 190th place in the world for processing packets

I tried to join the group but get a 403 error. The screensaver is working fine though.....

Anybody got any ideas ?

Cheers,

Diablo,
Some months back Tomorrows world ran a feature on the 'Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence' and have now got millions of techie folk downloading data from a website to be processed on their computers and then sending it back. Luckily the novelty has worn off in this company and the electricty bills have returned to normal and the offices are not unbearably hot in the mornings where people left all their machines on overnight doing it.

Cool

That makes it a lot clearer - not

Anyway, why bother. If there is INTELLIGENT life out there, the last place they'll want to come is this crappy planet .

Of course we are also blithly assuming that the Aliens would be friendly but as we are only recieving not transmitting we should be alright. Mind you what with all the leakage of RF signals from TV radio etc. who knows?

Are you still paranoid if everone really is out to get you?

Talking

Adam Curtin has kindly set-up a web page to track our progress against time (and each other).

Very fancy graph plotting the progress of those in the top 10

Thanks Adam
