My money would go on a BMW 330. Its a cracking engine and decent handling drivers car plus with a remap will be quicker on the move than you think. My WRX is 'only' running 275bhp and a 56 reg 330D was matching me from 70-£$%^mph the other day!

IF looking at a diesel then I would choose a BMW diesel over a VAG group diesel.
BMW really seem to have the diesel thing sorted. Of course there are the odd engine that's not so great but generally even the 2.0 ones are decent.

I'd go with the 5 IMO, more of a luxury cruiser with plenty of room, bigger the engine you can afford the better if rwd is ok for you, but if you can afford the new model then that's the best family diesel saloon made IMO, even clarkson commented how good it was.

335d tourings are just getting to 15k now. A lot of car for the money.

Seat exeo estate 170 looks like an A4 avant all Audi internals with half the price tag. Great car.

Mine is on 48k miles, 56 reg, I wouldn't expect any more than £12k for it in p/x. Has a few good options too.

Drove a 535d Tourer that I could have had for less than £15k (05 with 60k miles), spent more as I wanted one that had the face lift (58 LCI) as the gearbox was deemed to be better etc.

Well pleased with mine so far, just the niggle of an injector dying but all sorted under the warranty. Looking forward to some better weather / road conditions as I'm finding it a bit scary to drive quick at the moment

Graz; scary? I'd say fun! Loving fishtailing mine and generally hooning around.

I went for a 330d after the scoob, and don't regret it in the slightest. The scoob was a standard WRX and the BM is every bit as quick, more comfortable and double MPG. Just had it remapped yesterday, so waiting to see what it's like overall now, but it's looking good so far.

Considered moving to diesel due to my 50 mile daily round trip for work but I was drawn to the Audi 3.0TDi quattros over the BMs due to the 4wd.

I tested the 3.0 TDi too. Yes it grips well, yes it's fast but my god its boring. Zero steering feel, blamange chassis on rock hard shocks. Nice to be in, good to be seen in but only the BM can deliver fast diesels that do interesting things around bends. Unless you live in Scotland, get a BM.

if you want speed then 335d or 330d, but if you prefer better mpg the 2.0d is best bet, and still pretty quick especially with a remap.

I reckon the mpg of a 320d and 330d are close enough to make the 330d a no brainer. 335d is a fair bit worse on fuel though so not such a great economy option.

Four pot diesels are hateful and always will be however good they are (our van has the 180 bi-tdi VW unit- works fine, sounds sh**).
