Was about to recommend something similar, but given you are only doing 12 miles a day which equates to around 3K a year you may want to weigh up the cost of diesel ownership vs petrol. Volvo a good choice though for reliability and value for money! Just bought a £1K FVSH V40 for the winter!

No better buy than a Civic. Most reliable car I have ever had other than another Honda-a Shuttle 2.3 which did 210000 before MOT emissions saw it off.
As for my Legacy....................just trouble so far!

clio 1.5dci £30 a year road tax £300 insurance, never dropped below 60mpg. and hasnt let me down, and if it does parts are very cheap. i use the scoob for evening and weekends and let the clio eat the miles driving work and back.

Or a personal favourite lol 1.7td mk3 Astra that thing ran forever in a day without issue and would often see us 600+miles off £40, best one was a run from the Cardiff to Manchester and home, the little beast used just over quarter of a tank and done over 300 miles

MG ZR, you will get a very nice one and still have some change. 1.4 is the one to go for, look nice cheap insurance and tax, i have a base model Rover 25 and just brought it over to croatia 1800 miles fully loaded, compressor and sand blasting machine amongst other things and did 54mpg, i get mid 40's most of the time including driving it like i stole it, i paid £800 and it's worth about £300 now so running it into the ground, but been trouble free for 40,000 miles in the last 3 yrs.
They go really well for what they are and handle well too, parts are dirt cheap from local motor factors.
Take a look at them and go for a test drive, you'll be suprised.

I still think they are a great car for the money, failing that i'd go for a civic but they are more money, as said above avoid french cars.

What about a Daihatsu Charade? The SL model comes with Aircon as standard as well as electric windows, central locking and electric door mirrors. £30 to taz=x as its a 1 litre 12V engine and comes in 3 or 5 door models. 58MPG.
Plus for reliability its a Japanese car and owned by Toyota

Sure all Renaults are not bad but my mate had a Scenic and he was lucky when he had all seats occupied as there were more people to push it!
Maybe he was unlucky and the one being offered here was a good one.

Mine is a good one, i've been round pretty much every inch of the engine and bay and know 110% there is nothing worng, all the costly bits have been replaced and the rest of the car is mint. I'd say your mate was unlucky or never looked after it like he should of.
