Renault Clio 182
Hi there, all being well I should be going to view an 05 plate Clio 182 tomorrow. Can anyone give me advice on what to look for? Looking to have it as a daily driver, i do around a 56 mile commute to work and back. What are they like to have as a daily? Are they fairly economical in terms of other hot hatches around?
The car has a full service history with 72k miles and the belts have been changed. It also had a new stainless exhaust fitted.
Thanks for your help
Matt

They are fun little cars, pretty good on fuel just as long as you dont boot it everywhere.
You do have to get high up in the rev range to get them going mind. I remapped mine using an RS tuner so it gave more low down torque in the rev range and smoothed out the 5k kick.

Hi Matt,
I do 50 mile a day in mine. I have had my 182 Full fat with both cup packs for over 18 months and love it more every day. My day to day driving is somewhat spirited and she returns 35mpg, if i behave that will become 39mpg and on a motorway run to Cardiff from Essex ive seen 44mpg.
Superb little car with one of the best FWD chassis ive ever driven.
Pointers off the top of my head,
Listen out for ticking from the camshaft dephaser at idle. Its quite noticable if its on it way out.
Also it should drive pin sharp and the brakes should feel very firm and wooden, almost "Race car" like brake feel. Dampers can wear as can bushes, both easy and cheap to replace.
Steering wheels melt from as little as 20k miles so dont be put off if thats worn. Brakes are cheap to replace however.
Exhaust hangers are crap and fail, and electrics can sometimes play about so check for dash lights etc.
They have a rough idle from cold but should be solid once warm.
Other than that check that everything works and history is good. If the belts have been done then thats a big weight off your mind.
If you want it for a DD then i suggest getting a full fat. These come with digital climate, auto wipers, auto Xennon headlamps, remote CD player and half leather/alcantara trim.
There are 2 cup packs available.
Firstly was the cup suspension which did the following:
Uprated the springs/dampers by 15% also lowers the car by 10mm.
Larger front hubs
Anthracite wheels
Wider front track
Styling cup pack included front splitter and larger rear wing. The splitters are expensive and prone to damage. Theyre expensive to replace so make sure its fitted if its a cupped car.

Regarding the splitter frayz mentioned.. You can get a skoda fabia splitter that looks the part for about £12
And most 182's dont idle smooth once warm, this is a common thing.. the RS tuner map I put on actually smooths out the idle by raising the rpm slightly
Also watch out for a noisy dephaser pulley, to change this you have to do the cambelt at the same time £££

Frayz yours looks a lovely example there, Orangio yours does too however its out of my price range, looking at 2.5k max. Great advice from both of you though. The skoda splitter for £12 would be a good mod to it.

brilliant little cars. as said can get great mpg out of them for a hot hatch.Used to do 50miles a day in mine and if sensible could get 40+mpg and that was with a de-cat!
can bit a bit of a bugger to get good bhp out of unless you have deep pockets.
as said dephaser rattles on start up and gearbox probs are the only major issues to watch out for.

Massive mistake to buy a non-Cup suspension pack car; makes a big difference...once you do get it invest in a reflective screen shield thingy as it stops the thumb grips melting on the steering wheel
Really rough idle when cold too, so don't be alarmed by that...only issues I've had with mine is the passenger electric window has stopped working, exhaust mounts all needed replacing and I swapped to a Scorpion 192 cat back after the rear box rusted.

You will enjoy it. I had a 172 cup, it was very good at what it did and returned 30+ mpg whatever the driving style, very chuck able but in my opinion a bit soul- less .... I returned to scooby ownership in just over 12 months.
