Default evo's

well, where shall I start?

I've now had 2 imprezas one uk and my current is a jdm

however I have an itch that needs scratching and fancy an evo but not sure between a 6 a 7 an 8 or a 9

anyone had any experience with any of them? even better if you've owned one of the above

the new car doesnt compare to an impreza really, its the wrx equivalent in evo terms.

the evo 6 cost me the same as my sti impreza to run and maintain really, but i dont think they are as strong when you tune them.

I was expecting the evo to be slightly more to run as the service intervals are shorter. I don't plan on doing too many mods as long as it's had the usual breathing mods I think that will be enough

I'd like an evo 9 but not sure my budget is going to stretch to one, I should be able to get a good evo 8 but as to which one I have no idea yet but I would like an fq340 with basic mods

I would try and narrow down your choice to an Evo 8, 8MR or 9 and stick to the FQ models. Don't get too hung up on whether it's a 300, 320 or 340 - you mat find a 300 that's chipped to 370bhp anyway. As they're 7-10 years old now I would focus on history and condition. I would suggest buying an unmodified car. Colour - grey or black.

I had a v3 STI for 7 years and an Evo 8 FQ300 for 5 years. In terms of running costs, the Evo was 1 mpg worse, 10% more to insure, about the same on tyres, routine servicing an extra £250 a year, clutch lasted 45k (STI was 85k on original clutch), brakes, shocks etc a little more, unexpected bills both very low for the performance.

Cheers for the advice pal, I'm hoping that I can sell my jdm sti now for a decent price and get one. I've been told that that the 6 speed evo gearboxes are weaker than 5 speed is this true?

have a evo 6 , still have subaru's as well , but quite liking the evo , running cost are very similar to a STI , which ever you go for, watch out for rust (even with newer cars) ,

hope this helps

Yes, 6 speed gearbox is weaker than the 5 speed but not the biggest issue to worry about.

Unmodified 8 MR FQ320 in Gunmetal, mature owner(s), with fsh including cambelt done at 45k/6 years and a recent clutch should be your no. 1 choice.

I used to have a Impreza sold it for a Evo IX Fq320, I heard the stories that they are dull but really wanted one, I lasted 15 months with it..............and yes they are dull, dont get me wrong they are a fine car and did everything my modded Impreza did and did it slightly better and faster, but I could never get away from the fact it was just dull to much of the time, normal everyday driving I could have been driving literally any old Jap Tin Top, hard to explain, like driving a Intel Microchip on wheels!! No soul to them. I tried to liven it up with a complete Titanium exhaust and 3" open mouth downpipe, but no it still sounded dull.
If you really want one I would say the 8MR 320 or 340 or a 9FQ320/340/360 and yes the 5 speed boxes are stronger than the 6 speeds, thou the 6 speed is still a tough unit, well it was on mine!
Heres a pic of my 9, looked mean as hell and every baseballcap wearing guy will stare at you when you drive past, which is not a good thing!!!!

I drive a jdm so being without the burble won't be an issue. as for the local cap brigade they can look as much as they like as long as they don't touch and surely the whole point of owning a car like this is because it can be dull and boring but at the drop of a gear and a squeeze of the throttle can produce something that makes you feel a but special?
