mmm I've been looking at a 996 as an occasional car (a temporary itch-scratch until the Ferrari is viable)......
I know it's seen as the "black sheep" in the 911 family, but I actually REALLY like the styling, and the the engine issues, well, you pays your money, you takes your choice.
Been looking at a C2s or a turbo
Dan
Just need to go and drive one first - might hate it

When i test drove one before my M i was immensly dissappointed.
911 turbo tempts but the reviews from people on here is its a straightline and "ive got a porsche" car only.
997's are coming down now tho. and they are lovely.
Such a shame the m6 isnt a better looking car...

I used to have a business partner with a 996 and I drove it alot, aside from the 2 engines it had in ten years it was dissapointing to drive and not as fast as the stats suggest, for 7-8 k it would be ok but I would be pretty gutted if spent 20

Cracking motors. Most people who slate them have never driven one. They are rapid and great fun to drive.
Not sure how a 996 Turbo can be called a "ive got a Porsche car"! It's an absolute weapon. Surely if someone wanted to say "ive got a Porsche" they would spend a few grand on a 2.7 Boxster??
I'm with ScoobyDoo555, the 996 is lovely looking and a proper useable modern day "super car". Then again i am not a fan of the 993 which if uttered amongst some porsche circles would get you killed.

My point about the turbo is based on Zips opinion of it being a bit dull. Straight line only isnt enough with the company it attempts to keep.

how does the c4s drive compare to the turbo? I only driven the c2. I still have a major 911 itch to scratch for some reason. Perhaps ill go test a turbo this weekend and see if it makes my love my M again like the 996 c2 lol Not too fussed about rwd at the mo as i have my track car for that. 911 turbo might be a good brute of an addition to the family?

The problem with the base 911s is that they don't feel as fast as they are. They are so linear and competent they feel much more like a grand tourer than a sports car.
My 993 Carrera was fabulous over long distances - very comfortable, very easy to munch miles, good to drive if not ultimately that exciting.
However - in reality it was actually faster than my Sti V when it was standard - and I thought that was a rocketship. We did some quarters and the 993 (RWD no traction control) was actually faster.

Indeed, 0-100 in the C2 is 10.5s according to the OP ... faster than you'd think!
TX.
Edit - 0-100 in a P1 is 13.3s, Spec C is 11.1s ...

This is true, I had a 996 C4 for a few years and often did a double-take when I looked at the speedo. Very comfortable on long journeys (I used to regularly do a 200-mile slog in mine & used it as a daily driver) and not much really goes wrong with them, as long as you buy one with the RMS issue resolved. Servicing was quite expensive, but that's to be expected, and of course you need to shell out for decent tyres. Fuel economy wise it was better than the Scoob I used to have.

if you read the posts all of the people who have commented have driven them. Im afraid your the one that sounds like you havent.

I have owned a few Porsches over the years and my last was the best, 9972S. Thing is the 996 did go a bit "soft" so some people thought it was a bit sloppy and not that much of a drivers car. They fixed that with the 997!
Re power outputs, they make great power on the right fuel and I am told they tend to have well over and above the quoted power, 10% so I am told. Cant say as I ever put my car on the dyno but it was rapido and felt like a lot more than 350bhp, 35bhp more? Perhaps thats about right actually.
It would pull like a train once into 3rd gear, had to watch it in 1st and 2nd though as you could get the back end to break free if there was a surface change or if it was cold. The N rated tyres are only good down to 7c and after that they really dont like it.
50-150mph was easy peasy and I saw 175mph a few times and it felt rock solid.
Brakes are excellent too.
