Default Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Turbo? 993? 996?

A friend is looking for a 911 Turbo with 4WD.

Were they available in the 993 or 996 models? If they are available, what sort of money do they sell for?

I think realistically the 993 is more in his price range, although he might be able to stretch to a 996 depending on his bonus!

Sorry I don't really know much about the 911's!!

Any advice welcome, and if he buys one I get first dibs on his S3!

Hiya Andy

Yup there is a turbo 4wd 993 model - one of my fav cars

If you have a look on www.911virgin.com, even the 993's still retail around 35k.......

Budget £60-£100k for a 996 Turbo coupe.
You are just starting to see early 996T's being sold private for £60k - with mileage in the 30k's. Personally I would spend £70k & get a main delaer car with 20k miles on it.
As for 993's...they seem to be holding their values very well.
Typical example here.....www.cridfords.co.uk

Again you can get them loads cheaper but with these cars are expensive to fix so spend a little more & get a good one.

We were talking about cars the other day and he was saying how he wanted the Audi RS3 to come out.

My comment was that for the £35k (guessimate) an RS3 would cost, why not buy a 993 Turbo. He said that it needed to be 4WD, but would have the 911 over an Audi!!

I'll point him at this thread!

Sorry, I forgot to thank you guys for the info!

Looks like he should be concentrating on the 993, as I think the 996 is out of his budget.

993s will probably hold their value since they're the last of the air-cooled 911s and so will be held in high esteem by Porsche purists !

I've heard this from a few people! But at nearly half the price of a 996, the 993 sounds like a bargain!!

993 costs lots more to run than a 996...beware! Being a cheapskate I went 996 instead despite preferring the 993's looks (exterior), build quality and rawness (relatively)

What sort of price difference is there in the servicing costs?

Yes, this is available. It was called the Porsche 959. Good luck.

I'm not exactly sure but it's like 100% a year..services are more frequent and more expensive. Saying that the depreciation on the 996 would hurt far more...I was just typing to hear myself LOL

As with most cars, the 911 has got softer with each evolution. The 993 is a very raw car and although it’ll stay on the road thanks to well sorted dynamics and 4wd, it is still a right old handful. The 996 is softer, more refined, more comfortable, more luxurious and doesn’t feel like it’s trying very hard despite being significantly faster.

Rather than choose the car on budget you are better off asking what you are going to do with it. If it is a weekend only, radio off, backroad charger then take the 993, or get a mk 1 996 GT3 for about the same £50k ball park.

If you want something a bit more civilised that can take the daily commute, do 25k miles a year, won’t make your ears bleed but will leave everything else standing and has all the toys, get a 996 TT (or a C4S if you want to save £20k and don’t mind a small drop in performance).

Servicing a Porsche is the easy bit. Any dealer or specialist will give you a forecast of menu prices. The bit that hurts is if anything wears out (they don’t often go wrong). Tyres, exhausts, brakes, heat exchangers, shocks etc are all big buck on a Turbo and the newer it is the less items there are to have worn out.

You won't find a 993 turbo for £35K. If your mate has £35K to spend on a porker then he should look at a 996 C4.

C2 is better IMO, but the C4 is a cracking all rounder.

Best place for info on this would be any/all of following:

http://www.stuttgart9.co.uk
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?f=48&h=0
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/
http://forums.rennlist.com/

I run a 430 BHP 993 Twin Turbo as my everyday car and it is wonderful. Rather quick to 100 mph (circa 8.5 secs) and then really starts to fly after that!!!
Very reliable and only bad on fuel in town (14 mpg from computer).

Agree, finding a 993 TT for £35k is impossible unless LHD.
Dave, how did you get your 993 TT up to 430 BHP?

Agree with Dapster. The 993 and 996 are fundamentally different beasts. The 993 is more raw and mechanical feeling, while the 996 is more of a GT. In terms of performance the 996 has the edge, as you would expect from a newer car.

I guess what I am saying is that you have to be a Porsche enthusiast to fully appreciate the 993 and overlook the outdated interior ect - people just don't buy them for that kind of thing.

Personally, I went out to buy a 993 C4S. After much looking and back-to-back comparison with a 996 C4 I went for the 996 C4 without hesitation becuase my criteria included a moderl looking interior and some toys. I have not looked back since.

A good 993TT is likely to set you back £45k.

For the non-turbos, the servicing costs are over double per annum. I have a 996 C4, it costs c.£280-£320 for a service every 12 months from a main Porsche dealer.

Thanks Dave, sounds awesome. I presume the 996 is close to that as standard as it comes with 430 BHP out of the box,or added weight might counter.
The factory option costs about £10k which seems a bit excessive but I hear the turbos and intercoolers are different.
I'm dreaming about buying a 996 TT but my sensible side is saying invest the money. The other half of me says you only live once! The other problem is once you've owned what is probably the fastest, best built daily driveable production car in the world what the hell do you buy after??!!!!
Anyway, I'll carry on day dreaming!!

Just for info the stock 996TT has 420 BHP. Upgrade to what is now "S" spec (was X50 ) adds 30BHP to that. The car is then on different (KKK24) turbos as opposed to KKK16's
