Help me choose a summer hack
I really craved some open top motoring this summer so I think now is the time to start looking for a convertible for next year.
Requirements are:
4 seats (rears are for my 2 kids),
Auto,
Comfy on 2+hr drives,
Depreciation proof.
Shortlist:
E30 325i
R107 Merc SL
Porsche 993 C2
Porsche 996 C2
I can think of various pros & cons for each, most of which relate to cost of either purchase, insurance or running but what would you pick and why? Or any other suggestions?

The rear seats in a 911 can are awful even for kids - the slope forwards.
I've just seen for sale a1984 Merc SL - not sure what engine it is but it's in a very pale metallic gold/green, auto, 64k miles, £11k.
If I had room for it (and spare £11k!) I'd certainly look more closely at it.
I reckon you'd get your money back in a year or two's time.

That's interesting about the 911 seats, I remember them when I was a kid but it was the leg room that bothered me rather than anything else.
Prices of SLs seem to vary wildly and I can't see why, although I've not inspected any yet so maybe condition?
I've yet to see a BMW that isn't completely knackered or with a shady history.

No convertible should have four seats

I'm leaning towards a 996 now simply because it's got the most creature comforts. I'm pretty sure the BMW would be the cheapest of all and the Merc would hold the most value but I feel the 996 has the best overall package even though I'll be spending around 3 times that of a good 325.
