Default Touareg V10 anyone?

Hoping to pursuade the wife to get rid of the excellent but bloody boring Lexus RX, could do with a bit more MPG but not that concerned as its fun im after, we need the 4x4 for space with the kids and dogs, dont like estates she said, so ive been looking round and you can get these for great prices and in standard form they do the same mpg as the rx but have over 300hp and over 500lbft, re-map will take them to mid to high 20's on the mpg and over 400hp an 800lbft.

Anyone ran one and what did you think?

I thought of having one myself, but ruled it out because the MPG wasn't that good. Reviews I read all said around 20mpg on average. Watch out for tyre wear also, they are notorious for chewing through tyres in under 10k miles.

most 4x4 's go through the tyres so i will have to put up with that even if we keep the lexus. yes standard is 20ish mpg but boy would it be more fun than a lexus, i miss the mid range grunt of my scoob so what best to get than a diesel with shed loads of torque

I read up on them during my hunt for a winter car. It didn't take long for the reliability stats to scare me silly.

If buying used without a really good warranty, my fear is the "fun" you'll get compared to the RX will be replaced by a world of famous VW unreliability.

Scary engine...basically because there is absolutely zero room to work on it. Worse than Audi V6 TDIs (which are bad enough on their own).

The problem with these engines is any ancillary or engine-bay loacted problem costs a fortune in labour to fix due to amount of things in the way that need to be removed to gain access.

Alternator belt is fun to replace...its about 6" long, at the back of the engine and needs the cooling system drained (water cooled alternator), fuel rails, filter housing and associated pipework just to gain access...stupid design taking several house to sort. On a BMW X5 its a 20min job from start to finish.

On par with Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports/Discos IMO....get a bloody good warranty. And be prepared for VW dealer fob-offs.

Loads of oomph but the engine is VERY heavy. Weighs 200kgs more than the petrol V8. Apparently spoils the handling a bit. One of the best sounding diesels though.

There was an issue with the driveshafts on eariler models: They initially used the same shafts as the v6 until VW uprated them on later models.

but presumably fixable in a few mins by a Sub Sarahan tribesman with a mole wrench and a sharp stick

I find it hard to believe that a remap that produces 100 more bhp and 300 torques can also increase mpg by 25%.

I'd go for the 6.0ltr v12 Audi Q7 when the prices are in focus ( 500bhp & 738 Ibs ft ).Would be perfect for motorway work or any place that v12 can stretch its legs.If you can fix the slow gearbox in the Touareg, then great but you have to get it above 3,000rpm.

But then you have to own a Q7.

Which is socially more tragic than Tourettes syndrome.

I know one person who owns a Q7. He is a pleasant man and runs a successful business in a farming area and appreciates the traction of his Audi as well as its comfort and finish.

I previously knew one person with Tourette's syndrome. He could not gain employment, although many who suffer do and some do very well. However, the unemployment rate (as a proxy for social tragedy if you like) amongst sufferers in small studies is at least quadruple the average compared to non-sufferers.

In my experience and understanding the social tragedy of Tourette's is greater than that of owning a Q7, but my experience and understanding of Q7 owner's is minimal.

But, did that Q7 have wheels bigger than 16"?
If it did then it's still a social tragedy.

An ex mate just bought a Q7.

Note the word "ex..."

Zip - 16" on the Landy,, SEVENTEEN on the BM (smallest possible with the 348mm brakes).

I test drove a V10 Toerag before getting a Discovery 3

Awesome performance but 17mpg, so the quoted high 20's mpg is pure fiction... They chew tyres (and no, not all 4x4's chew tyres, the Rangies and Disco's do 30k on a set...the V10's do 12)

Not high tech by anyone's standards, with 2 valves per cylinder technology...the 3.0L V6 was deemed the better engine for all round mpg/performance/everyday use.

I've now got a mapped 3.6L TDV8 3.6 Range Rover Sport and it's virtually as quick with far more refinement and better MPG.

Plus the V8 sounds better imho...

Default VW Toureg (Pre-2011) do touch with a B* Poll

I bought a VW Toureg because I felt I was getting a lot of luxury for a very reasonable price. Over the 18 months I had the car it was in the garage for 3 months of this time, 2 full geometry step ups of the 4x4 wheel alignments, going through a set of tyres every 6000 miles, a new water pump and full water pipe work system change, intermediate drive shaft bearing changed which took a week to find the problem. VW suggest to have a brand new car sitting alongside mine and change each part until the noise disappeared. With reagrd to the tyres VW replaced the first set and the garage replaced the next set and then I sold it.

The Toureg I had was a 2005 model. I have new bought the new model and what a difference, 10000 mile and all the tyres are like new (ie still 8mm tread all round) It drives like a dream.
