Default VW Touareg Experts (Drivetrain)

My parents 2007 Touareg has started making a clunking noise from the front end while reversing and turning, no noises when going forwards.
They have had differing opinions from the dealer technicians, one said its normal for four wheel drives w.t.f !!!! and another said it didn't sound right, no **** sherlock!
Anyone got any ideas, driveshaft perhaps?
It seems main dealers are pretty clueless at times

Nik.

Its still under warranty... get on the phone to VW customer services on 0800 0833 914 explaining that *** dealer employs a bunch of retards as mechanics that cant even diagnose a clunking noise and hey presto you'll find the dealer on the phone quicker than lightning

certainly was a problem for 4 x 4 vehicles permanently driven in 2 wheel drive.

bits of the drive train don't get lubricated.

dunno how the toureg works though.

Thanks but they live near Newcastle. Its going back to the dealers next week as they want it for a couple of days to check it out, heaven knows what the outcome will be.
The last time it went in my Dad had to use the threat of legal action and trading standards before they jumped to attention. Basically it went through a set of tyres in 7k miles which the dealer initially said was normal. Needless to say all were replaced under warranty including a geometry setup
Its a shame when you spend the thick end of 40k with a dealer that these problems occur.

Well if its the same as my mate's V10 then it could be the Turbos, gearbox, prop shaft, drive shafts or any manner of electrical components. His has spent more time being looked at than on the road. The V10 seems to have a number of issues.

Mind you when its in the right frame of mind its an awesome car

Its a 2.5L TDI Altitude.
When its well its a great car, but in between, thank god for the warranty!
Electrical wise it has already gone through one battery.

i am not one but reversing and turning clonks can be a problem with the differential.
i would make VW customer services aware of your problem before taking it to a dealer.

The car has just come back from two days at the main dealers and they can't find anything worng with it .
When my dad dropped it off he spoke to the same mechanic as previous and the mechanic informed him that he had checked around 10 cars and none had displayed the same knocking noise so there was defo something wrong with their car.
When collecting the car the same mechanic was accompanied by the garage manager who gave the news nothing could be found.
When challenged the mechanic back tracked on what he had said two days earlier.
In conclusion it appears that they are waiting for the car to break no doubt at a very inconvenient time for my parents!
40K car, might as well have spent 5...........

Your Dad needs to go on VW Touareg Owners Forum • Index page

The tyre wear is a VERY well known Treg problem.

The original Contis are cr+p and most folk fit Hankooks or Grabbers - Tyres: Mobile Tyre Fitting for Car, 4x4 and Runflat Tyres - and they get VW to pay for most of the new set which will do up to 40K.

As for the gearbox clonks, this is most likely a stepper motor problem, but can sometimes be fixed with a software upgrade though most have had that.

Again get onto VW customer care and raise merry hell.

But do spend some time on the Treg website. Its very good.

Other problems are gearboxes failing arounf 60-80K. Mine's gone tonight! Warranty Direct, here I come!!

Turbos dying.

All manner of electrical faults and batteries dying.

And there is an on-going saga about which is the correct oil to use in the 2.5 wit some dealers putting in the wrong oil. Seems if you use Castrol III or 507 spec, it does the engine in or somesuch.

It's a very nice car but far too troublesome and there are no specialist dealers so you have to put up with main dealer prices and they charge £100 just to look at a problem , let alone start work on it!! So when fixed the Treg's fixed I'll be waving goodbye to it, methinks.

All that from the second fastest depreciating 4x4 out there!

Dealers not knowing which oil to put in?

100 quid to look at a problem?

VW arent the company they used to be!

If the dealer is classed as an empowered dealer than VW customer care don't have much to do with them as they are supposed to sort there problems thereself's, as for the clunk i'm thinking transfer box i've heard a couple with the same kind of symptoms do this.
