Nice car!
First thing first, get the engine undertray off and check the power steering rack to pump pipe!
If its leaking, replace it (any dirt in the oil can kill the pas pumps, plus the pipes are a common issue)
Also have a good check of the rear suspension springs as they also fail due to corrosion!

Got mine about 6 weeks ago - love the SMG.
Have you had any kangarooing 1st to 2nd gear?
dnc
Edit to add: I know it's childish but changing down gear whilst on the gas is so addictive

175 is achievable.
I'm currently on the latest M-Power training session at Wokefield park (BMW GB Training HQ) and the m3 has been discussed in quite detail today!!

New/current M3 - yes maybe (in fact highly likely). E46 M3 - very unlikely.
All 3 series (mine included) don't have great aerodynamics.
M Power training session sounds fun - can you ask them to stop selling badges to goons in old E36 318s and similar though?!

Apparently, the csl will hit 180 if derestricted, but remember it puts out 360bhp, so 17bhp up on standard, and it weighs 110kg less than standard too!!
We don't sell the badges, you have to have an M power chassis number to order anything!
I blame ebay, and pikeys stealing them, and plonkers fitting them to crappy bms,and the Labour party, and my nan...cos she's old!

I bugged the hell out of the tutor today, so to stop me annoying him any further he is going to get me loads of info of limits of the current and recent m power models.
