MK2 Golf GTI 16v or not?
Been looking at a few of these recently, and really fancy going for one soon, there seems to be quite a premium on the 16v cars, is there much difference to be had between the two?
is there anyone that has owned/still owns one of these that can give any advice?
I had a couple of MK1 GTI back in the day, are these as good/better, etc?
Cheers.

I owned one, and what can I say? The most sorted front wheel driver in its class in the last 25 years I would say. Handled fantastically, you could get it on the edge, then keep it there. Even me as no more than a mediocre driver looked good when driving it.
Only driven one Mk1 and I would say it was a more sorted cat rhan the Mk1.

I had two -- over a 12 year period, loved them
followed by an oak green one -- seen below -- actually a right off as someone rear ended me and the back is totally caved in

I was torn between a Mk2 Golf GTi 16V and a E30 BMW 325i when I was getting my first proper performance car. Went for the BMW in the end, can't beat RWD
Was a close call though. My Passat has a 1.8 20V engine, must be similar to the GTIs of old, seems to pull well enough for my everyday run around.

Bit of a fallacy that. 16v is quicker accross the range.
Deffo get a valver. Much more fun to drive, you can rev the **** off them and they love it. Stupid premium on them nowadays, stay away from ED38 and the scene tax. Don't bother with oak green cos people charge an extra grand for that too. Had mine for years now. Before that my dad owned it. 202000 miles on the clock, still going strong. Awesome cars. Although I love my scooby, the golf gives me greater pleasure to drive.

I've had two MK1's, two MK2's ( a 8V and a 16V ) and a MK3 too. Have to say I loved the MK2 8V the most but the MK2 16V was the better car. More refined, quicker through the gears ( though it just didn't feel it ) and let's face it - with the big bumpers it was prettier !!!

Go for the 16v mate!
I had one, sold it 5 years ago and I've regretted selling it ever since.
Mine was small bumpered, non power steering, helios blue.
Any excuse for a pic or 2

I am on the lookout for a 20 valve Turbo converted Mk2, saving up and getting mine ready for sale as I miss the Golf thing, I had 2 Mk1's (1600 and 1990 GTI Engineering), 4 mk2's of varous flavours and though the 16 valve was undoubtedly faster I preffered the 8 valves to drive.
I am trying to get six grand together to buy the best converted mk1, mk2 or Corrado I can find, to my mind I have had no more enjoyment in a car than the Mk2 Golf, the Pug 205 was nice (I had a 1.6) but I nver connected with it the same, I want what I had before, maybe its a mid life crisis (40 in November) but I have had a Golf GTI on and off from 19 to 36, so its just a recurring theme but I dnt think after various 250 bhp cars a 112 BHP one will cut it.
I also fully expect for these to go the way of Escorts, the prices are sure to go up, maybe for original ones, not sure about modded ones but it wont put me off.

Owned a black one with the big bumpers many moons ago like this:

TX.
PS
The 16v is only a tad quicker than the 8v it just goes about its business in a different way ie higher revving. All the better for it IMHO.
PPS
My first ever car was a mk1 GTi, 1800 version!
