New 330d blatastic

Saw a post this morning about a new BMW 330d developing 220bhp and 330 (yes you read that right) lb/ft. Does anyone know anything about this? Likely to give a few WRX owners a good kicking.

Good motor just a pity is so heavy. If I was doing plenty of miles I would consider one as as arent I wont . I doubt it could kick my WRX either

I drove one for a week in France last year and can say they are very torquey in deed. Not as quick off the line as a scoob but mid range is very good. Easy to get the back end out with the tranction control off....

Someone on here recently said it could match a Ferrari 550 from 50 - 70 mph.

Dunno what they're capable of but do know the 330d is a fine motor car and would have thought it could put these new WRXs in their place

Went round Nurburgring in MattOz's old 330d - stunning car - very very quick - seem to remember him overtaking the M5 Ring Taxi at one point
M3 and the 330d are the only BMs I would really seriously consider only owning.

They are an absolutely cracking car. Quicker in the midrange than a Scoob, but obviously not quite as quick off the mark or as involving around the twisties. Still, there is no other car that I'd recommend for day-to-day use provided you can shell out for one.
The Ring highlighted just how great the car was. Over the technical parts, it was easily a match for a Scoob, although it did lack a bit of power when the uphill bits came along. Still, the new one seems to be addressing that. Fingers Crossed. Might even find me considering another one, you never know. LOL

I know that the BM has masses of torque and the quote of 50-70 quicker than a 355 or 360 is always given ..
Can anyone shed some light?
Bear with me on this ..
Facts
-----
I've seen somewhere that the 330D 0-100 is something like 27 seconds. It gets to 60 in about 7.5 ish. It also is quicker from 50-70 than almost anything.
So 0 .. 60 - 7.5
0 .. 70 - 9 ? (guess)
that would mean 70 - 100 in about 18 seconds, thats one hell of a long time !
The only explanation I have is that 50-70 is in-gear acceleration rather than through the gears?
Correct me if I'm wrong, not slagging the 330D off just interested as it could be a future purchase. This means that through the gears from 60-100 the Scoob would kill it ?
Anyone care to explain?
Doofus.

The 330d will get to 100 in the quoted 22.5 no problem at all and she'll pull like a train all the way to 140mph. The only thing that annoyed me about it is that 4th gear is long as hell and if they had made it shorter the 0-100 time would be well under the 20 second barrier IMHO.

Sounds good doesn't it, this deisel life. Try living with one if you are into fast cars, I did. Great for a while then you realise something is missing, well actually alot is missing. Mid range punch is sort of there but not in the way the figures would have you believe, great if you spend your life on the motorway, as that's where they belong, and will produce good mpg, and have a great deal of room for your pipe and slippers.
BMW produce good deisel cars but that's the handicap, they are BMW's, (wa*k**s, no fog light switch as already pointed out), and erh, what's the other thing, oh yes, they are deisels.

OK, so you knew I'd respond...
330d is a cracking car, and even the current one (188hp/288lb/ft) will give a std (new) WRX a run for its money in mid-range, the new one gives about the same power/torque as a Van Aaken chipped current one and that is quick - 330-340lb/ft of torque ripples tarmac
The 50-70 is done in top gear, and hence the 330d's strong performance. 50-70 in top in an impreza is crap as the turbo has barely kicked in. It is a demonstration of in gear flexibility, which with almost 300lb/ft torque (85% of which is there from 1500rpm) is the 330d strong point.
If you are wanting a car to drive the ***** out, then the 330d is not for you. It is quick, but deceptively so and designed to get you from A to B without the hard work and drama (and cost) but just as quick. Drive it like a petrol and you will be disappointed as it runs out of steam at 4500rpm, but keep it between 3000 and 4500 and it pulls like a steam train.
You can't really compare a WRX with a 330d, they are completely different propositions (although the wrx is getting more 'BMW' than the proper (old age) scoob ). If you just want a car to drive for the hell of it - AND can only afford one car, then the scoob is a fabulous package, and for the money is unbeatable, unless you are willing to consider a hot hatch.
If (like me) you spend 90% of the time in your car getting from A to B, sat on motorways and A roads, do moderate to high mileage but still want a quick car, the 330d hammers the WRX every which way you look - and the money you save will pay for that 'proper' weekend car to drive for the hell of it
...which talking of 'proper' cars - the sun is shining, I am going to get mine fired up and taken out for a good hoofing 13,000rpm here we come......
PS - if you would really disgard a BMW just 'because its a BMW' then more fool you. The tossers that drive round with their foglights on are those in either older models, or base company paid-for 318s - more usually having just graduated from Saxos/Lagunas etc. Its the driver not the car - the car turns the foglights off automatically whenever the engine is turned off - you have to manually turn them on every time BMW are the best volume engine builder in the world, and package the engines in class leading cars. They may not lead every class, but just about every one they are present in. I guess its down to whether you go for the car, or the badge image

One word sums up the 330d: Effortless!
My VTS and my dads 330d will overtake a lorry at approximately the same rate and it goes like this:
VTS: Check for gap..check revs and calculate gear required to take her above 4500rpm..drop box and floor it (engine screams)...overtake and then come pull back in and back into 5th....cruise!
330d: Look for gap, press throttle...float past lorry and continue on your way.

Does anyone know when the new 330D engine will be released, as i have just ordered one and have to decide on either an my02 or my03 build, resulting in either a july or sept delivery. If the new engine will be in the MY03 cars i will definitely hold out for it
cheers

I don't know - but would gamble on MY03. In any respect, it is worth waiting for the new Model year as BMW always through in some extra goodies. BMW (and all manufacturers) tend not to announce new changes/improvements until the last minute so as not to harm current sales.
