They have a reputation for eating cams and costing "lots" to repair. Mostly on earlier models. Combination of not great to start with, then VW added the PD injector system to it IIRC...
Later engines are supposed to be better...

Got a 2005 2.0 Tdi a4 as mmy everyday car and i have to say i love it! remaped to aprox 180bhp and 300lb and it flys for a diesel, still get 40-45mpg out of her even if driven like a bell end!

Used HLM tuning in Bromsgrove for the Map, would not use anyone else but him

i had one for a year, wild heavy on the derv, unless your doing long runs.
i had no bother with mine, as per usual if its serviced and the belts are done you'll be fine.
a lot of boys say there not the best but that's there experience. personally i would buy a 130bhp and remap it, the 2.5 is a bit of a let down in performance

The 1.9TDi is nigh on bullet proof and the remap will give you good performance (not great!) with VERY good economy
The 2.5TDi 4WD gives you the fun of better traction and control and with a remap.... yummy.
Mind you - I have the 3.0TDi Revo remapped and the farking thing is just bloody GREAT fun!!! With the Milltek exhaust fitted it even sounds great as well.
On top of that, when I drive the 10.5 miles to work I get mid 40s mpg Motorway cruise I get 50....
Remap was shy of £500 and the exhaust £800 fitted. I'm popping to a RR next week to see what figures it'll return but it should be around 280bhp and 380-400 ft/lb

A mate's dad is a retired Director for a big haulage firm and ran the car fleet. They had a batch of Audi 2.5TDIs for senior management and had so many clutch and gearbox issues that they cut the contract early and went back to Volvos.
Nice looking, generally solid but from a generation ago in terms of weight and technology.
Kieran - all fine now with yours? Decent power but a 335d still has you for bhp and torque and it's lighter ;-)

I'm no fan of BMW's in general but Matteeboy has hit the nail on the head here, Audi's diesel engines are just not as good as BMW's - saying that the 2.5 is an old engine design the newer 2.0 litres ones are better, but still lagging their rivals IMHO.
If it could be done a 335d or 330d engine in a A3 or an A4 with quattro would make a very nice car in my eyes !

Took some doing but I got a good recompense out of Audi for the hassle.

I would get the 130 and remap it, the 2.5 is a waste of time, heavier, worse on fuel and more to service, it isnt really any faster, well the one I drove wasnt, the 3.0 A6 Quattro I drove was nice but still no ball of fire, they arent drivers cars, they look smart, are very competent and have some kudos but are generally boring, what you want if you are doing mega miles but for a short commute why bother ?
