Default Track toy suggestions

Guys,

I've recently sold my scoob as i wasn't really using it since moving house, now looking for something that will do the odd road journey but primarily for track.

I am 75% leaning towards a 205 GTi with either an Mi16 or a GTI-6 engine... been to see a couple and defo like them but not seen one i actually want yet.

Any other suggestions with the criteria being...

Quick(ish), as light as possible, cheap to repair, cheap to insure and ideally easy to stick a cage and buckets in... handling is more important than speed for this one...

My overall budget is around £3500 max but ideally for that i want it caged..

Cheers,
Chris

306 GTi6 (phase 1) - nice n cheap, plus lighter than the fatties that followed it including the Rallye)

Wifey's got one, but am waiting for her to want something else so I can track-car it

mg zs 180 ,amazing what these can do with some tweeks.Mine weighs less than a clio 172 cup ,been on track with loads of pugs ,some very high specced ,never come across one that could deliver what it promised and they seem to spend half of every track day fixing problems.
Que the onslaught from the barrage of pug owners

P.s its not that all the drivers have been pants either,i organised a trackday at combe earlier this year and there was a very high spec pug 205 going round ,after i pummeled him he got david de costa (that name will mean something to those in the know)to take it round a few laps to see what it could really do with in car video,on playback it showed 1.27 laps (its on net somewere),i got one flying (scruffy)lap on video from in my car ,it was a 1.22,still on standard shocks.

MK2 seat ibiza cupra

They come with the Golf GTI MK2 engine in them (both 8v and 16v) so will be cheap to buy and cheap to fix when you wreck various part on it

Lots of options out there, if I was doing it again I would go for a 3 door Focus Zetec, circa MY00 W plate - as a road car ours was superb, so as a stripped out track car with suspension and brake mods, lightweight and some cams/TB's it would be an awesome car.

In fact, I may even sell my 205 next year and go this route.

mg owner - I would normally disagree with you and say that my 205 is always reliable, but I'm due at Oulton tomorrow and had to put a new sump on over the weekend, which subsequently screwed the ignition wiring somewhere so its currently missing on full load

Only have this afternoon to fix it
